Former National Champion "Flyin" Mike Faria won his first Costa Mesa Scratch Main of the year at the world famous bullring oval on the Orange County Fairgrounds.
Faria drew the pole, but it was Buck Blair in gate four who was first to turn one. Blair's momentum carried him wide in turn two and Faria went underneath the Colorado native and took the lead. Shawn McConnell and Ryan Fisher also went by Blair, but were so busy battling each other that Faria's lead was never threatened. Fisher kept the pressure on McConnell and actually ran bumped the second-placed rider's back tire. That move nearly threw the former Junior National Champion from his machine. Faria was first to the checkered flag, McConnell hung for second, Fisher was third, Blair finished fourth, and Bobby Schwartz was fifth.
In the Handicap Main, current Under 21 National Champion Skyler Greyson held off all of Buck Blair's challenges for over six laps. Just as Greyson was going to take the white flag, though, Fisher went down in turn three and brought out the red flag. With just two laps left to be completed, the restart set up a green-white-checkered situation with the riders lined up in their running order. Greyson led again, but exiting turn four he went wide and Blair shot up the inside for the lead. Greyson drifted wide in turn one then slid off. Blair led the final lap for the win, Faria, was second, Eddie Castro finished third, Nate Perkins was fourth, and Dukie Ermolenko finished fifth.
The Support Main required a restart after a pileup in turn one brought out the red flag. The second time the tapes went up it was Michael Hernandez who took the lead. Billy Braden finished lap one in second place, but Hernandez simply ran away and hid from the field. Hernandez won his first Costa Mesa Support Main, Braden was second, Rohn Zellner finished third, Bryan Buffington was fourth, and Rudy Laurer finished fifth.
Matt McBride dominated the Support B Main Event by leading from start to finish for his first victory of the season. Mike Bershee finished second, Ryan Tovat was third, Mike Boyle finished fourth, Kim Stevens was fifth, and Steve Bowen finished sixth.
Jason Ramirez defeated Joey Holt and Austin Novratil to win the Youth Main Event. Samuel Ramirez beat Lauren Hammond and Victoria Matthews in his Pee Wee race. Braydan Galvin was victorious over Shane Terry, Ryan DeLong, and Jesse Nash in the other Pee Wee race.
There won't be racing at Costa Mesa next weekend due to the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Speedway returns on Saturday, June 3 with Orange County Harley Davidson Night. In addition to speedway racing, street-legal Harleys will compete in races on an evening that always attracts a large crowd.
