Three-time National Champion "Flyin" Mike Faria had a perfect night, including a victory in the Scratch Main Event, in front of a large crowd on Orange County Harley Davidson Night at the world famous Costa Mesa Speedway.
Faria started on the pole and banged bars with current National Champion Charlie "The Edge" Venegas as they entered turn one. Their battle took them a little wide exiting turn two and "Nasty" Nate Perkins tried to blast through the inside. Faria mustered enough speed to get back to the inside in front of Perkins in turn three, but Venegas was forced to remain outside. Perkins tried desperately to get another chance at the leader, but Faria calmly led the final three laps for the victory. Perkins had to settle for second, Ryan Fisher was third, Ricky Wells finished fourth, and Venegas drifted back to fifth.
Faria began the night with a victory over Scott Brant in the first heat race. Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz defeated Wells in heat two. Buck Blair beat Shawn McConnell in race three. Venegas ended round one with a win over Fisher.
Faria held off Fisher to start round two. Perkins passed Schwartz to earn his first win. Wells won ahead of McConnell and Brant who had a hard-fought battle for second. Venegas made it two in a row with a win over Blair to end the second round.
Faria began the final round by winning his third straight race. Sterling Cogar scored an upset victory over Fisher and Schwartz that earned himself a spot in the semi. Perkins won his second straight race ahead of McConnell. Venegas concluded the heats with a win to match Faria's perfect score.
Faria won the first semi handily with Perkins following him into the main event. Venegas got the best start in the second semi, but Fisher charged up the inside on the back straight to take the lead and the win. Wells led the Last Chance from start to finish to complete the main event field.
Eloy Medellin was impressive in winning the Support Main Event for the third time this season. John Stunkard finished second, Rohn Zellner was third, Billy Braden finished fourth, and John Marquez was fifth.
Steve Bowen was never challenged en route to victory in the Support B Main Event. Steve Dziadus finished second, Scott York was third, Hal Blair finished fourth, Aimiris Santana was fifth, and Lance Remington was credited with sixth.
Harley Night was the first event at Costa Mesa since the Fair Derby nearly two months ago. There will be racing at Costa Mesa the next four Saturdays with the Warren Russell Cup scheduled for this Saturday.
