The weekend’s Team Cup at Vetlanda became the new millenium’s first official
speedway meeting in Sweden. A total of six full matches were planned. Three
qualifying matches were staged on Friday, but Saturday’s finals fell victim
of rain. The C-final was abadoned and the other two finals were cancelled.

Bengtsson was a Smederna top rider in the 80's, but hasn't ridden since
1987!
Lennart Bengtsson also spent a season in the United States in the early
1980's. He competed in First Division over here before returning to Sweden.

I have been asked by the guy's who made up the Czech touring
team to pass on their thanks to everybody concerned, who made
their recent trip, an enjoyable one. They would be the first to admit
that things did not start to well at Exeter, but it needs to be
remembered that this was the first time on a bike since October of
last year for most of the guy's. They really did feel quite badly
about the result at Exeter, and unfortunately you didn't see the
best of them.
The meetings at both Edinburgh and Workington went much
better, and they would like to think that they gave a good account
of themselves ( I certainly think that they did), especially
considering that none of the touring team had seen these tracks
before, let alone ridden them. At both meetings they were
appreciative of the momentos presented to them before the
meetings began - several of the guy's were concerned that they
had been given Monarchs Tartan Kilts, not realising that they were
actually scarves.
It was obviously a very big blow not to have had a chance to
ride at either Sheffield or Newcastle, but that's the way speedway
goes. It does look however as though the guy's may be back in
2001 as the majority of the tracks that they were scheduled to ride
at this season have indicated that they would like them to return,
as has one visiting promoter who was impressed with what he saw.
I will try and give you an impression of the riders thoughts
about the meetings that they had.
Michal Makovsky - Obviously many people were taking a keen
interest in Michal's progress on this tour. Overall he did as much
as could be expected, and from talking to him, is definitely looking
for a chance to ride in the UK on a regular basis.
Adrian Rymel - Probably the rider who made the biggest impact on
the tour. Adrian showed, as he has on his previous visits to the UK,
that he has the potential and ability to make it in the UK. To this
end, his aim is to make it into the top 3 of the Czech Final, to meet
the DofEE requirements to gain a work permit, and then to gain a
team place in the UK. I am sure that he would be an asset to any
team, for as well as being a rider of ability, he is a showman, and
does seem to have the right attributes to become a "personality".
Tomas Topinka - OK I may be a little biased on this one. I think
Tom achieved everything that he wanted with this tour. It gave him
some vital race practice, to help in his forthcoming season, and
certainly put himself back in the shop window as far as British
Speedway is concerned. He was the overall top scorer for the
Czechs, and top scored in 2 of the 3 meetings that were held. His
overall knowledge of the way things work in the UK certainly helped
some of the more junior members of the team. He also became the
first person to beat Peter Carr at Armadale this season. He would
like to have scored a couple of points more at Workington, but
found himself in the wrong place at vital times, in hectic first
corners.
Richard Wolff - This was a very difficult series for Richard, riding in
the number 4 position for these meetings. He felt that he did quite
well at both Exeter and Edinburgh, but was bitterly disappointed
not to score at Workington. For the whole of this season Richard
had 13 meetings booked, 5 of which were these meetings in this
series. He know finds himself in the position of finding 2 of these
meetings rained off, 3 completed, which leaves him with 8
meetings between now and the end of October - experience is not
going to be easy to come by for Richard.
Pavel Ondrasik - An experienced campaigner in Europe, but
relatively new to the UK. Pavel's only previous experience being a
tour with the Czech under 23 team, which resulted in an horendous
crash at King's Lynn, which sidelined him for a season. His series
was acceptable, and the experience invaluable. He will learn from
this and his target is also a top 3 place in the Czech
championship, and the chance that comes with that to gain a work
permit.
Josef Franc - Pepe, as he likes to be known, was new to the UK
scene, this being his first visit to these shores. He really is a trier
and is very determined, although things did not go his way. In his
2nd meeting (at Edinburgh) he crashed quite akwardly and has a
suspected broken wrist. However he refused to go to hospital, and
continued to ride, but obviously was quite subdued after this -
although those of you that saw his heat 2 victory at Workington on
Saturday may not think so... This guy could be one to watch in the
future.
Robert Kral - Robert had a mixed series really, from being second
highest score at Edinburgh, to doing not so well at Workington. At
Edinburgh, his gating was exceptional, although he did struggle
after making the gate, but usually held onto his position - this was
to be expected though, given the nature of the tracks that he had
ridden on prior to this. At Workington he was not so good, but then
had the race of his life to nearly deny Peter I Karlsson of his
maximum. This tour was a vital experience for him, and will be a
benefit to him in the future.
Bo Hadek - A name that some of you may remember. Bo was the
team mechanic for the trip, and was there to pass on his
experience to the youngsters. He had to work as hard as anybody,
and enjoyed himself immensely. He was very keen to remind
anybody that wanted to hear, that he did score 19 points for Exeter
against Belle Vue, and that he had beaten Jason Lyons 3 times
from the back that particular night!! A real character and an asset
to the team.

There has been plenty of comment on the list recently about the
form of the Dryml's. Their bikes that they have been using were
tuned by a guy from the Czech Republic, and basically are too
strong for the UK tracks - basically too much power, which on the
motorway type tracks that we have here, the bikes are unable to
deliver in a successful manner. The brothers now have engines with
an English tuner, and these should be back with them shortly. It is
hoped that with engines more suited to English tracks things will
improve.

At last somebody defending the Dryml's. Thanks Steve. I reckon a lot of
people have been very fast in knocking these guys. A lot of that has been
around the fact that the feeling that Staek should have been in the Oxford
side not Ales Dryml, but as has been said before that certainly isn't Ales'
fault. I also feel Staek deserved to come back after being rider of the year
but I don't pick the team
I hope that what Steve has said is the answer, I for one certainly hope so,
although it seems a few are just waiting for them to fail !!
