A close match yes but, in the final analysis you have to say that the
Exeter heat leaders hardly looked worthy of that status.
They scored just 13 (paid 14) between them whereas their Island
counterparts amassed 30 (paid 32)
and It was left to Bobby Eldridge to produce what surely must be his best
ever performance so far in his career to keep the Falcons firmly in the
hunt and, at times, seemingly heading for an unlikely victory.
He put his more esperienced 'senior' riders to shame being unbeaten in
his first four rides before being beaten by Danny Bird in heat 14.
Eldridge recorded three of only five heat wins for the visitors who led
8-4 after the opening two heats.
Bird was in brilliant form romping to his paid maximum (is that his first
Sir Nick Statto????) and his partnership with new signing Adam Shields
was litlle short of sensational (producing three 5-1's) as was the
latter's debut.
>From the moment he swooped from the outside gate in his first ride to
sail into the lead at the first bend he really looked the part.
Unbeaten by an opponent in his first three rides, enthusiasm to record a
debut max got the better of him in heat 12 as he fell trying a run
around the boards in heat 12 but, on the basis of what Island fans have
seen of him so far, it looks as if he'll certainly justify his heat
leader status.
Somehow (thanks mainly to Eldridge!), the Falcons led 37-35 with three
heats to go but the Islanders slammed in 5-1's in hts 13&15 to take the
victory.

Poole squandered an 18 point advantage over the final three heats to make
their chances of the bonus a lot harder when they visit Foxhall Heath on
July 6th. With Mark Loram pulling out again Poole called on the services of
Jimmy Nilsen as a guest and the Pirates certainly were in command for the
first 12 heats. Emil Lindqvist foiling a tactical substitute move by the
Witches in heat 11 when he gated clear of Gollob and Louis, and with Nilsen
taking second place Poole looked on for a big demolition job on their
visitors. Three successive 5-1 reverses cut their lead from 18 to 6 the
maximum advantage from Gollob and Louis in the final heat ruining
Gunnestad's unbeaten evening.
Poole completed their 3 home/3 away matches and their averages to take
effect next week now read:
Loram (2 home only so still on 99 figure) 9,62
Havelock 8.86
Nicholls 7,86
Gunnestad 7,36
Watson 4,85 (he MUST return to the side when fit irrespective of averages)
Lindqvist 3.50
