Arrrggghhhh.
Reading contrive to not only throw away an 8 point lead (they were 34-26 up
after heat 10) they also commit speedway hari kiri in het 13.
On a 5-1 Castagna is almost run into by Wester out of turn 2 with Wester
falling and getting excluded.
Then Castagna goes into the tapes (at least the ref thought so - it was a
close call - and I would probably agree).
Resulting Wilson/ Kessler 5-1 puts Sheffield right back in when they looked
cooked.
Most annoying.
In the final analysis Morris saves a point in heat 15 when fending off
Kessler behind Wilson and Castagna...
All this and the Bryn reaper wasn't to be seen...
*= 15 metre handicap
Reading 45
A Castagna (3.3.3.1*.2) 12
(There were a few people blaming Castagna for the dropped point!
I certainly wasn't one of them.
A magnificent pass of Kessler in heat 6 was truelly world class. Weighed up
and passed around the outside. Glorious.
Beat the brilliant Wilson in heat 1 to confirm his return to top form.
Unfortuately heat 13 was a disaster and he may have been at fault for
pushing Wester wide out of turn two - flippin marvelous!
One of them nights!)
P Clews (1.1.3.2') 7+1
(Another good quality home show but his lack og gating is going to be
exposed on the northern tour I suspect. Another terrific heat 8 - he soars
past Allott and Cartwright this week.)
P Morris (2'.2.2.3.1') 10+2
(No fault here. Sean Wilson passed him in heat in heat 5, Kessler j-u-s-t
beat him to the flag in heat 9 and Wilson was away in heat 15. Those were
his only dropped points and his heat 15 battle to beat Kessler was
tremendous. To have lost this match would have been a travesty.)
K Marsh (3.0.1'.3) 7+1
(Another massive heat 3 5-1 - this time over Stead and a rock solid heat 14
win were the cornerstones of this show. Looked to be passing Cartwright but
is too easilly impeded in heat 5)
P Wester (1'.2.1.Fx) 4+1
(Oh dearie - too many more like this and the Swede will be on his way out I
fear. Forced on to Phil's bike in heat 4, then awful starts on his own
equipment in the next two. Finally looked to have sorted things in the vital
heat 13 but went for Castagna's line - maybe Castagna should have looked for
him but the Italian was always going to ride wide out of turn 2- amd fell.
Wilson and Kessler were left for dead in the first running. The pain....
Nurse pass the pills)
M Norris (3.0.0.0) 3
(Passed Allott for a rare win in heat 2 after Colvin retired. Thereafter
flattered to decieve. Diappointing in heat 14 when he looked to have no
power out of turn two when Lee Birkinshaw just trundled by.)
S Colvin (R.2.0.0) 2
(Horrible night for Reading's hugely inconsistant reserve. Passed Allot in
heat 2 to lead a Racers 5-1 but had an ef. 2nd in front of Wester (!!!!) in
heat 4 then awful. Worst was in heat 12 when Birko was making miastake after
mistake on the outside and he couldn't make an inside pass.
Unless one of these two tightens their form surely one has to go if a decent
3 pointer is found...)
Sheffield 45
S Wilson (2.3.3.2'.3) 13+1
(What a class act. Superb.
Best visitor this season by a street. Right on Castagna's exaust in heat 1
and big winner in heat 15 - I would have said he wouldn't have won heat 13
on the first running but with a 15 yard handicap he would have beaten
Rickardsson on this form.)
S Cartwright (F/r.1.2) 3
(Markedly worse than lst season at Reading - but then again he was a reserve
then. Beat Colvin for his 2 and was fortuate to head Marsh when a slip meant
Marsh had to take evasive action as he was mounting a pass.)
S Stead (1.3.R.2) 6
(Crumbs, I expected better than this. His only win came at Per Wester's
expense when Wester gave him two bike lenghts advantage into the first turn,
but he managed quite a good time. Behind both Racers when he retired and
beat Colvin in heat 12.)
P Lee (0.1.1.2) 4
(How depressing is it going through all these Sheffield scorers and saying
disappointing???!!
Same applies here. Only beat Norris for his 4 point return and as generally
uncompetitive at the first turn.)
R Kessler (3.2.3.2'.3.0) 13+1
(Excellent heat leading effort from Kessler - very quick starts.
Beaten in a classy ride by Castagna and in a hard ride by Morris - those
were his only defeats. Fine effort - rode Reading much better than his last
visit)
J Birkinshaw (2*.0.0.1'.1') 4+2
(Crucially - as it turned out - gifted points in the reserve race off a
handicap when Colvin's bike failed. Rode all sorts of weird outside lines
but sill beat Colvin in heat 12. Vital pass of Norris in heat 14 out of turn
2)
A Allott (1'.0.1') 2+2
(He didn't look as good as last year here.
Lovely style though - I'm still convinced Sheff have a winner here.
Points gifted in heat 2 and beat Colvin heat 8.)
Well... that was a night to forget for Reading but at least they can claim a
point from it.
Trips to Edinburgh, Berwick and Newcastle look daunting.
Swindon next monday looks hard too - possibily a season deciding 4 days for
Reading.

Armando Castagna increased his lead to 10 points in the overall standing
after winning the fourth round of the Italian championship at Giavera del
Montello on Sunday.
The Reading racer was in brilliant form but suffered the bumpy track earlier
in the preliminary heats dropping points to Alfonso and Dalla Valle in his
first outings.
But as he got acclimatised he came back convincingly with two wins in the
two remaining preliminary heats and with a masterpiece in the 5-man final
when he passed Maida on the outside during the second lap.
The grand final had to be re-run after Alessandro Dalla Valle fell while in
third place behind leaders Castagna and Maida. Second time out was Maida who
jumped from the tapes to lead for one and half first lap. But as he entered
the third bend of lap two Castagna came from the outside to pass him with a
hair-raising move.
Maida was never far behind for more than two lengths but Castagna held on
until the chequered flag.
Third was Stefano Alfonso with Simone Tadiello, who managed to qualify for
the grand final twice in the last two rounds, was a deserved fourth.
Top 5 finishers, Castagna, Maida, Alfonso, Dalla valle and Tadiello will be
the automatic choice for Italian coach Vito Artosin for the World Team Cup
squad who will contest the qualifying round 2 next week at Lonigo against
Hungary, France and Slovenia.
Scores:
1.Castagna 2.Maida 3.Alfonso 4.Tadiello 5.Dalla Valle 6.Milanese 7.Ulian
