After seeing the results from the recent American Championships the winner
Mike Faria a 43 year old rider and qualifiers 40 Year old legend Sudden Sam
Ermolenko along side Josh Larson. It does make you ask the question Who will
follow in the footsteps of the likes of Hamill, Hancock and Ermolenko once
they are gone and past their prime.
Are there any up and coming riders in Nth America besides Josh Larson (who
quite possibly qualify for the G.P., but would not be entirely successful).
who has the potential to the fill the shoes of the Hamills, Hancock's
Ermolenkos etc?? and also emulate the golden era of American Speedway when
the Penhalls, Moran's etc were a force to be reckoned with......Any
Thoughts??? I would be quite interested to know if there are any real
prospects and not just "stocking fillers" for the overseas finals as in
recent years gone past.............cheers Anth Mac....

As announced some weeks ago, the worst kept secret in Australian Speedway is
that SRN magazine owner and former ISMS 500 founder and promoter David Tapp
along side new partner Geoff Lowe (best known throughout the speedway world
as the Australian distributor of Koni Shock Absorbers) has formed a new
company aptly named Speedway Series Pty Ltd that has bought the rights to
promote speedway at the Gosford City Speedway venue currently run by Local
Icon Terry Poole father of local star, Mick Poole.
The traditional 360 metre bike venue 360 metre Speedway is the only fulltime
operating Speedway Solo bike facility in NSW, and been developed into one
Australia's premier purpose built tracks over the last 8 years under the
tenure ship of Poole and also with the hard work by such people as Ross
Allen, Glenn Russell and Jan Grainger and many other people behind the
scenes from the supporters club since it's inception.
Tapp has indicated some major improvements are planned for the track to turn
into a world class complex complete with widening of the track to
accommodate 6 bikes per race, more banking, improved lighting and a new pit
area which will provide riders with change rooms, hot showers and pens for
their bikes etc, improved spectator facilities, professional catering and
with Tapp's contacts within the Speedway world there is sure to be some
world class riders lining up Gosford. Their is a strong rumour that Billy
Hamill and Greg Hancock may be booked for a few shows in January. If Gosford
enjoys the same commercial and market success as The ISMS 500 concept as it
did under the Tapp promotion then Gosford's proud tradition that had been
started and upheld under Terry Poole should be ensured as it passed onto
the Tapp promotion.

might this be a step towards a Speedway GP in Down Under ?

Furthermore will Tapp continue with his series then ?

I don't think Gosford is or could host a World G.P., according to popular
rumour that honour would appear to be going to another great promoter in
this country Trevor Harding of Kwix Snax fame is apparently organising
something big for speedway next year, but don't quote me on that one. Trevor
has promoted Speedway racing in this country e.g. Test Matches etc before
Tapp took over from the mid 90'S with his ISMS vehicle. Trevor Harding has
also not only given money in the way of sponsorship dollars to promotions
and riders but also out of his own pocket as well. Take for interest the
injured Craig Watson, Trevor apparently payed for Craig's R&R whilst he was
back home resting up and receiving treatment. What does tell you for the
man??...not all dollars and cents.
As for the G.P. being staged it has not been determined if, when and where
it will be staged in Australia. Another rumour doing the rounds is that it
could be staged at a multi purpose indoor/outdoor Stadium in the city of
Melbourne, Victoria. Which is probably ideally suited for such an event as
would other venues come into consideration. My favourite would have to be
the The Ekka at Brisbane, QLD or Wayville Showground to host the G.P.
As for David running the ISMS again who knows, he will probably be busy
enough with Gosford Speedway and more than likely his focus would be on
hosting a one off or short series of meetings along the lines of the ISMS at
Gosford. Either way interesting times are ahead for the local Aussie
domestic Speedway scene. Looking forward to it!!!

The Wightlink Islanders recorded a comfortable victory over a injury
weakened Swindon side.

It wasn't quite enough for them to take the bonus point but their victory
was well deserved and fully appreciated by the biggest crowd of the
season so far.

Swindon drafted in Sheffield's Paul Lee as a guest for the injured Neil
Collins, young Australian Lee Herne deputised for Mark Steel and the
Robins utilised the rider replacement regulations to cover for Martin
Dixon.

The Islanders took the lead in the opening heat and it was a lead they
were never to surrender.

Adams Shields could well turn out to be THE signing of the season
dropping just one point from his five outings to go with his 8 (paid 9)
on his debut against Exeter a fortnight ago.

Watch this lad go...he looks a class act...and he received good support
from his team mates particularly Ray Morton , Danny Bird and Scott Swain.

A special mention too for 17 year old Glen Phillips who is improving week
by week.

Only Islander to miss out was Adrian Newman - still feeling the pain from
his coccyx injury sustained at Stoke.

Swindon were well served by Frank Smart - always pressing for points -
and the hard worked Danish reserve Kristensen
