Subject: Oxford 47 Wolves 43
Date: Fri, 9 Jun 2000 23:50:29 +0100

Hi,
I phoned regular updates through to Mark Sawbridge, who posted them on the
Wolves list in his own imitable style... Thanks mate!

I'm off to Pembrokeshire for a week (no Wolves matches to miss you see...)
All the best,
Mark Rowe.

The team news:

Oxford

1. Todd Wiltshire
2. Mark Lemon
3. Steve Johnston
4. Jan Staechmann
5. Jimmy Nilsen
6. Ales Dryml
7. Lukas Dryml

Hi-Q Wolves

1. Jesper B Jensen
2. Sam Ermolenko
3. Shane Parker
4. Adam Skornicki
5. Ronnie Correy
6. Roman Povazhny
7. Wayne Carter

Nicki crashed in both Sweden and Denmark in mid-week and has concussion.

Heat One; Wiltshire, Jensen, Ermolenko, Lemon.

From the gate.

Heat Two: L. Dryml, Povazhny, A. Dryml, Carter.

Lukas rode very well to win. Wayne was not outclassed in last place.

Heat Three: Skornicki, Johnston, Parker, Staechmann (EF)

Staechmann's bike went at the start. Wolves gated for a 5-1, then Parker
made a mistake and Johnston went through. Adam clung on to win the race,
with Johnston on his back wheel and Parker on his!

9-9 is the score. Although the track is being watered, there's a huge black
cloud over the stadium that looks set to deposit its load.....

So far, so good.....

4. Nilsen, L. Dryml, Correy, Carter - 14-10

Ronnie touched the tapes and went back 15 metres. He passed Wayne, then
almost managed to catch Lukas without any joy.

5. Jensen, Ermolenko, Johnston, Staechmann - 15-15

Sam controlled the first turn, sending Jesper around the boards and into a
5-1 position, which they held easily. "Oh bliss it was on that day to be
alive," as Wordsworth wrote.

6. Wiltshire, Correy, Johnston, Lemon - 18-18

Ronnie gated, and on the third lap Wiltshire produced a piece of brilliance
to pass Ronnie around the fence. (The only other piece of brilliance to
come from Wiltshire is the road out of Swindon, if you see what I mean).
Roman was thrilled with third place, beating the man who took his
job.....hmmm.....

Heat 7 - Nilsen, Parker, Ales Dryml, Skornicki. 22-20

Adam went from "brilliant" in his first ride to "dreadful" in this one (I
was going to say "down the greasy pole," but he might take offence.

Heat 8 - Lemon, Lukas Dryml, Povazhny, Ermolenko (Fell Exc) 27-21

Nikolas II was the Tsar. This race was bizarre! Roman messed up the second
bend and caused Sam to almost stop dead. The "referee" (for want of a
better description) is Frank Ebdon and he refused to stop the race. Roman
and Sam, who had both come to a halt, realised what was going on and rode
round half a lap behind the Oxford pair. Sam, obviously infuriated, on the
first bend of the third lap almost ground to a halt and slid theatrically
into the fence. For some reason, presumably seeing Roman approaching, he
then dived head-first over the fence! Ebdon stopped the race, awarded it
and it was announced that Sam had been "disciplined" in the pits.

So THAT'S why that lady in fishnet stockings, thigh length boots and a whip
was doing there?

Better move on to Heat 9 before I get too excited, or my girlfriend catches
me.....

9. Correy, Johnston, Staechmann, Povazhny. 30-24

In another brilliant move, Peter "Albert Einstein" Adams (relatively
speaking) decided to take Wayne out, which means he has to have another
ride. Nice one Peter. No tactical substitutes either.

10. Skornicki, Wiltshire, Parker, Lemon. 32-28

Adam's consistent inconsistency returned, with a brilliant victory over
Wiltshire, who threw everything including the kitchen sink at Adam. Shane
Parker squeezed (sorry!) past Lemon on the third lap to claim a point.

Heat 11. Ermolenko, Nilsen, Jensen, A. Dryml 34-32

From the gate.

Heat 12. Johnston, Povazhny, Parker, L. Dryml. 37-35

Still no sign of Wayne's third ride, which means that he will be going in
Heat 14. We may be in Tactical-Substitute Land without a passport......

Good old Peter Adams.

Heat 13: Nilsen, Correy, Wiltshire, Jensen. 41-37

Wiltshire passed Jesper B on the last lap.

Heat 14: Skornicki, A. Dryml, Staechmann, Carter. 44-40

Another brilliant ride by Adam, who then did the do-nut in front of the
Wolves fans on the last bend. Wayne had to have his last ride in this race
when we could have had Roman with a bit more nous.....

Heat 15: Nilsen, Ermolenko, Correy, Wiltshire. 47-43

Nilsen from the start (well, you didn't expect him to pass anyone, did
you?).

Another last heat decider, and it's good to go to tracks and give the home
team a run for their money. Better tactics could have got us a result,
however.

Adam was a revelation, Sam and Ronnie did well, Jesper was a bit iffy whilst
Parker never looked like winning a race. Roman tried hard for little reward
whilst Wayne is just not getting out of those starts.

Oxford looked like nothing special, with both Staechmann and Lemon having
off-nights.

Thanks to Mark Rowe for his efforts in boosting the profits of mobile phone
companies! I hope you've enjoyed the write-up.

All good things

Mark Sawbridge.
