Subject: Grand Prix Qualifiers
Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 08:19:04 +1000
Rob's comment last week about Jason Lyons being good enough to be in the
Grand Prix was pretty close to the mark. Undoubtedly there are others like
say "Sudden Sam."
To me the qualifying system for the GP is the one weakness in the GP Series
that has to be sorted out.
One or two guys presently in the series have never ever threatened to get
in the A Final since the system was changed to a "Knockout" type
formula. It is fairly obvious they can't cut the mustard. I am prepared to
give the benefit of the doubt to Brian Andersen who I believe has not been
the same rider since his injury. Does it do the sport any good to see the
same guys getting eliminated in Heats 5 and 6 or Heats 9 and 10 in every
GP??????
I just wonder if it is feasible to guarantee a spot for every rider who
does not make the top 10 (except Wildcards) in the Grand Prix Challenge.
Would it not be better to ensure some of these riders who are perennially
in spots 19-22 to be eliminated from the GP Challenge? When it became clear
the World U/21 Champion was having trouble keeping up in the GP Series, the
system was changed. Should the bottom end of the GP be any different?????
I also wonder whether the top 10 should be changed back to the top 8.
These are two questions I am opening up for debate. Let's hear your
opinions folks.

Subject: Costa Mesa Results - June 17, 2000
Date: Sun, 18 Jun 2000 19:28:27 EDT
Andy "The Enforcer" Northrup stopped Charlie Venegas' winning streak at three
with a hard earned Scratch Main Event victory at Costa Mesa.
Northrup and Venegas were lined up in gates three and four, respectively, and
it was "The Edge" who was first to turn one. Venegas couldn't stay on the
inside groove and when he drifted wide Northrup used the low line to take the
lead. Venegas battled valiantly on the outside for a lap but couldn't find
the grip necessary to regain the lead. This allowed the rest of the field to
pass Venegas as well. Dukie Ermolenko tried in vain to catch Northrup, but
the man who is a police officer by day, stretched his lead all the way to
the checkered flag. Shawn McConnell finished third, Chris Manchester
finished fourth, and Venegas finished fifth.
The Handicap Main featured all back yardage riders as there were two riders
on the 40 yard line, three on the 50, and three on the 60. Jim Estes beat
Manchester off the 40 yard line and led into turn one followed by Northrup
from the 50, and Venegas from the 60, but the referee determined that Venegas
had too good of a start and ordered a restart with Venegas lining up on the
80 yard line. This time it was Manchester who led the field into turn one
with Estes in tow. Manchester quickly opened up ground on Estes because
Estes was busy fighting off the very determined Northrup who was seeking a
double main event victory. Estes withstood the challenge for 4 laps but as
he entered turn three Northrup bumped him off the line and took over second
in a move that should've brought out a red, but the referee allowed the race
to continue. McConnell capitalized and took over second, but he wasn't going
to catch Manchester who was long gone and looking very much like the former
Overseas Champion that fans remember. "Fast" Eddie Castro finished third,
Randy DiFrancesco finished fourth, and Estes finished fifth.
Randy Skinner made an auspicious return to action by capturing the Support
Main Event. Skinner, who has missed the first two months of the season
because of an off-season injury, didn't show any signs of rust with a smooth
performance to win the main. Paul Hitchcock was second, Sean Larned was
third, and Danny Holt was fourth.
The Support B Main Event was undoubtedly the most action-packed race of the
evening with several lead changes, none of which due to a rider falling, and
passing throughout the field. The last two laps saw first-year rider Randy
Kreps, Johnny Lupo, and longtime veteran Bill Green swap the lead several
times. Green led as they went into turn three the final time but drifted
wide. Kreps and Lupo made the same mistake and as the trio exited the turn a
three-man drag race saw Green come out victorious by inches. Lupo was
credited with second and Kreps with third.
The Support B Consolation had one of the wildest and scariest crashes seen at
the legendary Costa Mesa oval. When the riders entered turn one Eloy
Medellin fell down and Ed Martinez was left with absolutely nowhere to go.
Martinez used the prone Medellin as a ramp and jumped several feet into the
air and straight toward the turn two wall. Fortunately, Martinez was able to
get the bike down and avoid a disaster. Martinez was down for several
minutes but got up on his own and participated in the restart.
Crystal Kramer continued to show her fellow juniors that she was one lady who
will not be messed with as she rode to victory in both Junior heats. In the
second heat, Skyler Greyson put up a challenge, but Kramer held him back to
secure the victory.
This coming week features two races on the Southern California speedway
schedule as the riders return to the Ventura
Raceway Friday Night. "The
Commotion by the Ocean" is a 1/5-mile banked oval that will provide exciting,
high-speed racing. That is followed by the annual 25-lap main event at Costa
Mesa on Saturday Night.

Fast Fridays Speedway, Auburn, CA -June 16, 2000
A hot night at Auburn, with some excellent racing, as always a lot of
overtaking, but a number of injuries to riders.
Scratch Main
1. Billy Janniro
2. Bobby Hedden
3. Mike Faria
4. Charlie Venegas (tapes, disq)
Charlie Venegas had been suffering clutch problems all evening, and in the
scratch main it pulled him right into the tapes. The rerun was a great race
with Bobby Hedden getting the gate, being chased hard by Billy Janniro, who
got past him on lap 2. Third man Mike Faria was close behind.
Scratch Consi
1. Ryan Fisher
2. Bart Bast
3. Robert Curry
Tommy Hedden also qualified, but was a non starter. Ryan was first out the
gate, followed by Bart and that was the way it stayed for 4 laps.
Handicap Main
1. Ryan Fisher
2. Bart Bast
3. Mike Faria
4. Charlie Venegas
5. Billy Janniro
6. Robert Curry
Another great win for Ryan Fisher. He has truly established himself as a top
performer, and at the age of 16. His brilliant riding, along with his calm,
mature attitude must put him at the top of the list of the long term hopefuls,
in the future of US Speedway. This was a great race, with Ryan and Robert
Curry starting out on the 30 yard line and the rest coming off the 50. Ryan
lead all the way through, and maintained a safe lead. Behind him a strong
battle took place, with Charlie Venegas initially trying the outside, before
finding it was no quicker.
Handicap Consi
1. Bobby Hedden
2. Paul Orlandi
3. Ian Ferris
4. Chad Felicio
5. George Snodgrass
6. Tommy Hedden
In the first running of this race, Paul Orlandi had quite a commanding lead,
when Tommy Hedden fell. Tommy's fall appeared quite graceful, more or less
landing on his feet, however sustaining a broken hand in the process. He
was operated on the next day. The race was re-run with a staggered start
with Orlandi, Ian Ferris and Bobby Hedden much closer together. Bobby made
a great start, getting past Ian, then later getting past Paul.
Div 2 Main
1. Ivan Sevart
2. Tom Adams
3. Richard Powell
4. George Snodgrass
5. Dave Booth
6. Mike Browne
Another win for Bart Bast's nephew, Ivan Sevart.
Div 2 Consi
1. Marvin Sonnier
2. Matt Browne
3. Harlan Bast Snr.
4. Scott Olney
5. Don Chipman
Div 3 Main
1. Billy Hiles
2. Greg Hooten Snr.
3. Kevin Ferreira
4. Robert Mellor
5. Dave Baker
6. Bruce Baker
7. Mike Hooten
8. Dennis Chandler
Billy Hiles had another convincing division 3 win. This time he went
straight into the lead, but the race was stopped. In the re-run he did the
same thing, but within a lap his hand went up as his engine stopped. He then
appeared to turn the fuel back on, and re joined the race in fifth position.
It took him another lap and a half to regain the lead.
Div 3 Consi
1. Mike Achilles
2. Vince Bertolucci
3. Bill Warnock
4. Gino Bellino
5. DeFreece
6. Eric Ryan
7. Les Veale
8. Brian Leventon
Junior Div 1
1. Greg Hooten Jnr.
2. Chris Kerr
3. Bryan Yarrow
4. JJ Martynse
5. JT Mabry
Junior Div 2.
1. JT Fowler
2. Josh Newby
3. Danny Easley
4. Chris Olney (ef)
Junior Div 3
1. Chris Smith
2. Paul Johnson
3. Bruce Bast
4. Mitchell Johnson
5. Tom Fehrman
6. Michael Wade
7. RJ Becerra
8. Adam Butler
Other riders injured included popular lady rider Rachalle Kerr. Rachalle
fell down in her division 2 heat without injury, but before she had a chance
to get up, another rider ran into her. She also had a broken hand. Her
injuries could have been much more serious. The other rider's footpeg went
through her leathers into her back protector. Rachalle attended Cal Expo on
Saturday as a spectator.
Veteran rider Rich Mignano broke an ankle in a fall in his division 3 heat.
Bill Thomas, the oldest regular competitor in Northern California, (at the
age of 76 he must be the oldest competitor in the world!) fell in his
division 2 heat, damaging his shoulder muscles, thankfully no bones broken.
Mike was supposed to be going to the Overseas Final this weekend, but was
unable to raise the funds to do it. So the only US representatives will be
Sam Ermolenko, John Cook and Josh Larsen. Good luck to all three of them!

The 500cc Sidecar Association staged British Championships took place
yesterday in glorious summer conditions. Watering helped keep the dust
down and it was a professionally run show. The actual quality of racing
was nothing special and there were a few delays, but the scores were
close, creating tension right to the end.
Unofficial results:
250s:
98 winner Richard Smith & Lee Street were the guys to beat. They never
met in the heats and were both unbeaten, so it was all on the final.
Street got the gate but Smith was held up in traffic and by the time he
got past the impressive James Childe Street was gone.
There was a delay @ heat 12 after a nasty 4 man pile-up. Gary Wells
injured a shoulder and Paul Cooper & Adam Shipp took no further part.

For me, the problem is with the whole qualifying system rather than the
inclusion of certain riders in the GP Challenge. The current geographical
split means that many good riders don't have the opportunity to reach the
GP Challenge (whilst some poorer riders do), and the format of the GP
Challenge itself makes it easier for existing GP riders to re-qualify.
I've made such points several times in the past, and probably better to
direct people to an article I've written on the subject:

Subject: Wolves 49 Peterborough 41
Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 23:05:57 +0100
Anthony Weaver is sending a full report with heat details etc. so I won't
duplicate. Amazing turnaround in this match, Wolves were trailing 30-36 at
the interval after heat 11, and it looked like match over. At that stage,
Peterborough had won 9 of the 11 races.
However, that old codger Sudden Sam showed once again why he is the greatest
rider outside of the Grand Prix (!) with a fantastic performance to win 3 of
the last 4 races, and Wolves took the last 4 heats 5-1, 5-1, 4-2, 5-1 to win
49-41.
Wolves
Ronnie 7+2 - Very subdued in his first 3 rides. Said he had dreadful bike
problems, having a cracked frame on one bike and an engine problem on his
second. Solution was to make one good bike out of the two, and he got paid
wins in heats 13 and 15...
Adam 7+1 - Great return from the "difficult" number 2 position... included a
win over Peter Karlsson in heat 6.
Jesper 7+3 - Good performance, teamed up with Sam for two 5-1's, many
expected him to get the nod in Heat 15 but this time Peter Adams chose
experience!
Sam 14 pts - 4 wins, a puncture while well clear in his first ride, and a
defeat by Peter Karlsson. Vintage stuff from Sam, superb performance.
Nicki 7 - Very erratic, looked to be trying too hard... redeemed himself by
a stunning gate and win from the dreadful gate 4 in heat 13.
Wayne 2 pts - Rode with more fire and determination, led heat 2 until
Woodifield executed a ruthless pass up the inside, the two riders squared up
after the race, and for a while it was real "hanbags at 10 paces" stuff with
Nigel Sadler also involved...
Roman 5+2 - Battling performance as ever, very likeable guy becoming a real
crowd favourite.
Peterborough
Ryan Sullivan 5 - Very quick win in heat 1 then did little right.
David Howe 7 - Good performance, won his last 2 including beating Nicki
Pedersen in his last
Sam Tesar 8 - strange night, 2 wins, 2 thirds...
Stefan Andersson 8+1 - Same again - good score I guess, surprise choice
ahead of Sullivan for the last.
Peter Karlsson - 9 from 5 - Surprised (but delighted) that he didn't score
more points. Conceded vital 5-1's to Wolves in heats 13 and 15, good on you
Peter, I didn't need the rotten fruit after all. :-)))
Nigel sadler - 0 from 3 - dreadful, two engine failures then nowhere, what
was he playing at?
Brett Woodifield - 4 from 5 - Faded badly after winning heat 2, surprising.
So there you go, track was dreadful after about halfway, with a blue line
appearing early on, there was some good racing, but gating was vital later
on.
