Subject: Costa Mesa Results - August 5, 2000
Date: Mon, 7 Aug 2000 02:58:22 EDT
Speedway racing returned to Costa Mesa after a three week layoff with former
British League riders Chris Manchester and Josh Larsen each earning main
event victories.
Manchester and Larsen were lined up next to each other in the Scratch Main
with Manchester in gate five and Larsen in gate four. Manchester got the
best gate and rode the outside through turn one and down the back straight
with Larsen right behind. Manchester was able to get to the low line
entering turn three but when Larsen attempted to follow him Shawn McConnell
had a wheel underneath and took second. Manchester led at the close of lap
one while McConnell was doing everything he could to stay ahead of Larsen.
Manchester stretched his lead all the way to the checkered flag for his
second Scratch Main victory of the season, McConnell held onto second, Larsen
was third, Dukie Ermolenko was fourth, and Gary Hicks was fifth.
Jim Estes led the field into turn one in the Handicap Main from the 30 yard
line but was immediately challenged for the lead. Larsen started on the
outside of three other riders on the 40 yard line and got a great start and
headed to the outside in turn one. Larsen used his momentum to mount an
attack on Estes. Estes, riding a bike borrowed from Johnny Walker, tried
valiantly to hold off Larsen but the former World Finalist was not to be
denied. Larsen took the lead and was set for his first main event victory of
the season until he exited turn four on the third lap. Larsen parked
slightly forcing Estes to take evasive action. Estes ended up spinning
around and back into the racing line. Eddie Castro and Andy Northrup were
fortunate to get past but Randy DiFrancesco would not be as lucky.
DiFrancesco hit Estes and tumbled down the front straight, Brad Oxley, left
with nowhere to go, ran into DiFrancesco and went over the handlebars like a
motocross endo and landed hard on his head. DiFrancesco came out the worst
as his foot was caught up in his bike leaving him prone on the track for
several minutes but was able to get up and participate in the restart.
Sorting out the mess proved no easy task and was bound to leave someone
unhappy. The referee determined that Larsen was the leader and had right of
way, therefore Estes was determined the cause of the red flag. Since the
third lap had technically never been completed, the staggered restart would
begin at the start of lap three and Larsen would line up at the front of the
field.
Spotting a rider of Larsen's talent a lead in any race is a recipe for an
easy victory and it proved correct as Larsen led the field into turn one and
pulled away during the remaining six laps for an easy win. Castro held off
Northrup for second, DiFrancesco finished fourth, and Oxley finished fifth.
Frank Pecce took the lead as the Support Main field entered turn one, but
Gerry Duttweiler swept around the outside and they raced side by side down
the back straight. Duttweiler was able to assume the lead in turn three with
Pecce right behind. Pecce remained close throughout the race but was never
able to provide enough pressure to rattle Duttweiler who scored his second
main event win of the year.
Philip Williams, making his speedway debut, was very impressive in winning
his heat race and repeated his success by taking the Support B Main as well.
Williams had been a mechanic for former 2-time World Pairs Champion Bobby
Schwartz during the 2000 season prior to Saturday Night and definitely
benefited from his vast knowledge.
Charlie "The Edge" Venegas, who has won 10 main events this year, was absent
from competition after taking a heavy spill at Auburn the previous night.
Venegas, who had missed the previous weekend after a crash at the San
Bernardino event in which he co-promoted, spent several hours at the hospital
on Saturday and will most likely miss two weeks of competition.

Subject: Wolves v Oxford report
Date: Mon, 7 Aug 2000 23:35:50 +0100
A very controversial ending to yet another last heat decider at Monmore.
Oxford held a 2 point lead going into the last race, and the aggregate
scores were level for the bonus point (Wolves having already won 46-44 at
Oxford).
Todd Wiltshire and Brian Andersen got the lead at the 1st bend, but Ronnie
Correy got inside Andersen down the back straight, Wiltshire still leads.
Andersen slides off on lap 2 bend 1 giving 3rd place to Wolves' Jesper
Jensen. Correy rides an excellent inside line, and takes the lead from
Wiltshire on the 3rd lap. Going into the last lap, Wiltshire switches back
inside Correy and they clash going into the 1st bend, with Ronnie falling on
the outside. Referee Chris Gay lets the race continue before stopping it as
they cross the line with Ronnie still on the track. There is a long delay
before a result is announced - no exclusion for Wiltshire, 4-2 to Oxford and
all 3 points to Oxford. The crowd go mad!
I stopped behind to watch the video replay, and there appeared no doubt that
Wiltshire caused Correy to fall. Ronnie was "trapped" between Wiltshire and
the fence, and as Wiltshire turned, his back wheel took Correy down. The
referee couldn't have had a better view, but almost seemed to try to chicken
out, and made no decision at all. The result wasn't announced for what
seemed like agaes. Such a vital decision, as all 3 match points depended on
it. An exclusion for Todd would have given Wolves the 5-1 and a 46-44
victory and all 3 points. As it was, Oxford took all 3.
Earlier, it was amazing the meeting took place at all. Very heavy rain from
2 pm to 6 p.m. left the track flooded and a postponement seemed inevitable.
But the weather cleared, and lots of work to the track enabled the match to
start just after 8 pm. The track actually held up very well. Wolves started
well and led 19-11, before Oxford struck back with a remarkable 3 successive
maximums. Engine problems for Correy, Tesar and Pedersen in 3 successive
heats were very costly for Wolves, and vital heat wins for Andersen and
Wiltshire in heats 12 and 13 seemed to wrap things up for the visitors. But
just as they seemed dead, Wolves struck back. Wayne Carter joined Correy for
a match saving 5-1 over Mark Lemon in heat 14 after Steve Johnston had fell
setting up the last heat decider.
For Wolves, Jesper Jensen was man of the match with a fine performance.
Ronnie rode well and should have been the match winner in the last race. Sam
Tesar proved a poor replacement for "our" Sam, Adam was subdued and Nicki
again had something of a Monmore nightmare. Wayne rode very well to win
heats 2 and 14, very good performance. Roman had a win and 2 lasts -
erratic. All in all very disappointing.
Oxford look solid now with Andersen in and Lemon hitting form at reserve.
Very solid performance except for Jimmy Nilsen who was awful. This was
Nilsen at his worst, and he simply didn't look interested, apart from moving
at the starts! Amazingly, he moved at the tapes 4 different times - earning
one exclusion, 2 got called back, and one he got away with.
No match next week, next home match is Poole on 21st.
All the best,
Mark.

Subject: Sam's injury + Peterborough v Wolves
Date: Mon, 7 Aug 2000 23:51:19 +0100
Latest on Sam from the track tonight is that he is likely to make a very
late decision on whether to ride or not at the Inter Continental Final. He
may not decide until the Friday practice, or even later. This was announced
by Nigel Pearson - don't think Sam was there. Reading between the lines, he
is clearly determined to ride but the injury isn't healed properly - so who
knows?
Wolves are at Peterborough on Friday - or at least some of them are!
Tonight's programme explained that the original date for the IC Final was
Sunday 13th. This was moved forward a day back in April, with the practice
on Friday. With Sam, Jesper and Nicki all involved, Wolves requested that
Peterborough move the match to another date, even offering to give up a
Monday to go there. Peterborough have refused, and the match goes ahead on
Friday without Ermolenko, Jensen and Pedersen - who are replaced by Jan
Andersen, Toni Svab and RR.
This is plainly ridiculous. Neither team is in the running to win the
league - surely Peterborough can't be this desperate for the points? What
price entertainment for the paying public? Surely fans of both sides would
rather see two full strength sides? The Panthers are within their rights to
insist the match goes ahead, just as the travelling fans are within their
rights to stay at home! I certainly won't be going, and many more Wolves
fans have said the same tonight... what a shame. Any comments from
Peterborough fans?
All the best,
Mark.
