What a great meeting these two teams served up in front of another
big holiday crowd on the Isle of Wight.

You knew it was going to be something special in heat 3 when referee
Barry Richardson couldn't split Danny Bird and Andre Compton in the
tightest of finishes and declared a dead heat.

That gave Newcastle a one point lead which they maintained as
impressive Danes Jesper Olsen and Pedersen claimed victories in the
next two races.

Shields swooped past a startled Swales in heat 7 at the end of the
third lap and, with Compton retiring with mechanical problems the
resultant 4-2 gave the Islanders the lead

Most people were amazed when referee Barry Richardson ordered a
re-run of heat 8 after Darren Pearson slid off at the back with the
Islanders on a 5-1...which became a 4-2 in the rerun.

And then heat 10 - and what drama as firstly Ray Morton touched the
tapes and was put back off a 15 metre handicap.

His partner Richard Juul led from the start but Stuart Swales charged
underneath him exiting the second bend, Juul fell and to the IOW's
dismay (not to mention the rider himself!) he was excluded as the
prime cause of the stoppage.

So to the second re-run with Compton and Swales from the gate for the
Diamonds and solitary Islander Morton off the handicap.

Amazingly he reeled in the two Diamonds for a heat win that nobody could quite believe.

A 4-2 from Swain and Glen Phillips in heat 12 put the Islanders five
points, heat 13 was shared and then a very scappy start to the
penultimate race saw the Diamonds hit back with a 4-2 thus forcing a
last heat decider.

Newcastle won the toss for gate positions but it made no difference
as man-of-the-match Morton muscled his way to the front on the first
bend and went on to win and secure a memorable victory for the homesters.

AUG 23RD: AUSTRALIA V ENGLAND TEST SERIES FOR 2000/2001:
It has been revealed that a series of matches held over 12 rounds has been
proposed for this coming Australian domestic season. Queenslander Neil
Graham the brains behind the Gatton Showground Speedway has come up with
this exciting project which will involve the best young riders from Britian
and Australia. Such as Simon Stead and Ollie Allen who visited our shores
last year. The Aussie squad is expected to be made up of some of Australia's
best young talent such as our very own Star Ben Shields who thrilled the
fans at Gosford last year in his epic battles with Stead and Allen. No doubt
other Gosford Young Guns Jaye Stevens and Deano Wiseman will be putting
their hand up for selection as well in the squad. Tentative dates have been
already pencilled in for the start of the tour that kicks off on November
4th in the Northern Territory, at Kathryn, Darwin and Alice Springs, In
Queensland, Rockhampton, Archerfield, Yandina have expressed interest and of
course Gatton. NSW can expect a round at Gosford on Dec 2. In Victoria at
Mildura and also MT.Gambier have expressed interest as well. Stay tuned for
further updates to this exciting series and one that will hopefully revive
the proud tradition of Australia V Great Britain test matches in this
country.

Kevin
Just come across this Quote from Cyril Mays Rde it :-
In 1970,to challenge the JAP & Jawa monopoly, the beautifully produced Cole
Motor,designed by ex rider Howard
Cole.... and his innovative father. The Cole engine cost over ?30,000 and
that included ?10,000 for tooling up.In grass track racing it achieved some
magnificent honours.

Sorry thats all up to now.
