2014 Americans in Europe

September

September starts with Greg Hancock getting in a nasty crash with Niels Kristian Iversen at the GP in Gorzow. Iversen's season ended with that crash and Greg luckily came away with only a dislocated knuckle and fractured finger but should be fit in time for the SGP in Vojens. Greg currently holds a 14 point lead in the hunt for the World Championship with 3 GPs remaining.

August

The August schedule is a little light as Ryan Fisher appears to have a season ending injury and Wolverhampton parted ways, hopefully a temporary split, with Ricky Wells. The Americans finished off July placing 6th in the Monster Energy Speedway World Cup with a team consisting of Greg Hancock, Ricky Wells, Gino Manzares and Max Ruml, who undoubtedly had some promoter's mouths watering. Greg Hancock is only 3 points off the lead for the Speedway Grand Prix title after winning Cardiff and is currently
12 points clear of Darcy Ward, who is currently in 3rd.

July

July brings us Cardiff and the Speedway World Cup. Going into Cardiff, Greg Hancock tops the Speedway Grand Prix points chase, but only by 1 point over current World Champ, Tai Woffinden. Greg's Polish squad, the Tarnow Swallows, are atop the Polish Ekstraliga table. Greg will also be captaining Team USA's efforts in the SWC, with the first round to be held at King's Lynn in England. Ricky Wells, Ryan Fisher, Gino Manzares and Aaron Fox will also be representing America in the SWC along with their regular Premier League duties in the UK. Greg and Ryan's Polish teams have July off and will resume racing 08/03. Gino Manzares made a quick trip home to compete in the AMA National Championship Series at Ventura on June 28, coming 2nd to Billy Janniro, and showing just how much he has honed his skills since going over to race for The Witches

Under 21

USA's first non GP FIM World Event of the season is this Saturday - Gino Manzares races at Leicester in his World Under 21 Championship Qualifying Round. A top 5 finish would likely see him in the 3 round mini GP Final Series which starts in Italy in July and goes to Poland and Czech Republic.

Its a tough line up but the whole of the USA and his growing UK fans base will be behind him.

There is no Sky TV or Eurosport coverage but maybe a slight chance of a live stream via the Bet365 website. I will post it if I find it unless someone else does first.

Good luck to Gino!

May

May sees European speedway hit full stride. Sweden starts the first Tuesday. The Speedway Grand Prix visits Finland for the first time ever and then on to the Czech Republic. The Polish Ekstraliga runs nearly every Sunday and the British Elite and Premier Leagues see full schedules for the entire month. Greg Hancock enters the month tied for third place in the SGP standings. Ricky Wells is on fire and scoring great points, especially in the BEL. Ryan Fisher is riding great but is suffering back issues and visa problems for his family, which would distract anyone.

Gino Manzares is still having a great debut season for the Witches and looks to be a keeper for Ipswich. Aaron Fox, after a shaky start, is now scoring points for Edinburgh and seems to have worked through some of the issues plaguing him at the beginning of the season.

April

April brings the start of the Speedway Grand Prix series and the Polish Ekstraliga. Great Britain is in full swing now. Ricky Wells and Ryan Fisher have picked up where they left off last season with both riding very well. Gino Manzares debuted for the Witches with a very credible 6+2 while Aaron Fox had mechanical gremlins and rough track conditions in his opener with the Monarchs. Sweden fires up in May.

There are streaming links for most Sky matches, all SGP and there will be at least 2 Polish matches on every weekend. SGP opens in New Zealand on Saturday, the 5th but will be streamed live in the states on Friday evening due to the time zone difference.

Greg Hancock

Great research Steve!

Last year there were 2 Americans in the UK riding for 3 teams, now its 4 on 6 teams, doubled! There will be races almost every day featuring these guys - Only Wednesdays and Sundays are not a night when their teams race home matches.

Its going to be a busy time and I'm sure I won't be the only in SoCal hitting f5 endlessly between 1130 and 2 for the next 7 months. The box score updates site that Steve refers to is very very good!

I also wonder if Greg will do any more UK races to warm up for NZ - Sunday March 23rd is the Elite Riders Championship at Coventry, 6pm UK time, and non league riders can now be invited as wild cards, though the full line up is yet to be released. It is a good idea to move this event to the start of the year. The October date fitted the one night world final era - all the best rode in the UK, the old great Belle Vue stadium at Hyde Road had 20,000 fans and it was almost a World Final revenge meeting. Since the GP kicked in and increased rider schedules over Europe, this event has met a mixture of rider apathy and burn out. As a GP Prequel it could be a winner again!

Aside from the ERC, the first three Sky TV matches also feature USA riders;
Monday April 14th Poole @ Coventry (Fish)
Tues April 22 Belle Vue @ Wolves (Ricky)
Tues April 29 Newcastle @ Peterboro (Fish again)

Part of the new Sky TV deal was also additional matches being webcast - not heard the specifics on that but the more league racing on TV, as our USA rider base increases, the better!

Looking forward to an epic season on both sides of the pond - these are the most exciting times for USA Speedway in years!
