From Ryan Evans
Ryan Fisher pushed his Scratch Main winning streak to four at Arrowhead Motor Speedway in San Bernardino Wednesday Night.
Fisher drew the pole and was first into turn one. Scott Brant and Dukie Ermolenko battled on the back straight for second, which allowed Fisher to pull away at the end of the first lap. Brant secured second, but never got close enough to be a serious threat to Fisher, who went on to record his season-leading eighth Arrowhead Scratch Main victory of 2001. Brant finished second, Ermolenko was third, and Eddie Castro was fourth.
Although Castro finished fourth in the Scratch Main, he was able to post a better result in the Handicap Main. After starting from the forty, Castro used the outside to go around Mark Adams and Bobby Krips. Castro then passed initial race leader Charlie Cooley on the back straight on lap four and ran away with his fourth Arrowhead Handicap Main win of the season. Brant finished second, Cooley was third, Fisher was fourth, Krips was fifth, and Adams was sixth.
The Second Division Main Event had to be restarted when Shane Kump went down forced a red flag. On the restart, Colorado native Chuck Johansen beat fellow zero yard riders Scott Tidwell and Tomasz Hampel to turn one and quickly opened up a big lead. Johansen, making his first appearance at the track, was smooth the rest of the way and took the Second Division gold back to Colorado. Tomasz Hampel finished second, Poland's Maciek Czyzowski was third, Rudy Laurer was fourth, Kump was fifth, and Tidwell was sixth. Czyzowski is a former motocross rider and was invited to stay with Johansen after the two riders became friends while Johansen was in Poland earlier this year.
Robert Fiesler Jr. was a winner in his heat race and, despite a battle with Mike Boyle, he was a winner in the Support B Main Event for a very auspicious debut in speedway. Fiesler, whose father races Second Division, led every lap in his heat and the main. Boyle finished second, Jeremiah LeBlanc was third, Mike Lewisfinished fourth, Kim Stevens was fifth, and Steve Nelson was sixth.
Chris Manchester flew in from Reno, Nevada and made his first appearance at Arrowhead last night. Manchester won the Scratch Consolation, but couldn't make it past the semi on the handicap side of the program. Manchester made the trip to show his support for promoter Charlie Venegas, and is planning on riding again next week.
Next week is the final week of Arrowhead's very successful 2001 season. The program will feature the standard all-scratch championship program for First Division and scratch racing for Second Division and Second Division B.
