Arrowhead Motor Speedway Orange Show Pavilion San Bernardino, California
2002 Week Twelve
Arrowhead Speedway
July 3, 2002
From Ryan Evans
Scott Brant returned to his winning ways by capturing the Scratch Main Event at Arrowhead Motor Speedway in San Bernardino Wednesday night.
The lineup had Brant on the pole, "Flyin'" Mike Faria, making his first appearance at Arrowhead, was in gate two, Chris Manchester was in three, and Gary Hicks was on the outside. Brant and Hicks were out first and entered turn one together. Brant took control of the lead coming out of turn two and held it entering turn three. Hicks switched to the inside, but was unable to get past Brant. It would be his only chance as Brant opened up his lead with each lap and cruised to the victory. Hicks finished second, Faria was third, and Manchester was fourth.
Danny Perkins beat fellow 10 yard rider John DeFries to turn one to take the initial lead in the Handicap Main Event. Perkins had comfortable lead on DeFries, but Randy DiFrancesco moved into second at the end of the second lap and Perkins's lead quickly evaporated. DiFrancesco went under Perkins exiting turn four and took the lead. DiFrancesco was in control until Eddie Castro, who started on the 50 yard line, charged around the outside as they took the white flag. Castro stayed on the outside in turn one and completed the pass of DiFrancesco for the lead on the backstraight. Castro went on to the victory, DiFrancesco was able to hold Brant off for second, Manchester was fourth, Perkins finished fifth, and DeFries was sixth.
Rohn Zellner took the lead at the start of the Second Division Main Event, but his lead didn't last long. Billy Braden passed Zellner entering turn one the second time and opened up a comfortable lead. Braden's lead looked insurmountable until Northern California's Jonathan Curry began to cut into the lead on the fourth lap. Braden was able to hold the lead, however, and won his second main event of the season. Curry had to settle for second, Rudy Laurer was third, Bill Green was fourth, Zellner was fifth, and Robert Mellor was sixth.
Geoff Herkner was the winner of a wild Second Division B Main Event that was red flagged and declared a finished race after three laps were complete. Rusty Hall was credited with second, last week's winner, Steve Nelson, was third, Michael Novratil was fourth, Neil Facchini finished fifth, and Jeffrey Badders was sixth.
Justin Boyle passed Miles Calvin on the second lap and went on to the victory in the Junior Main Event. Tim Gomez also passed Calvin to earn second place, while Calvin finished third.
It was announced that tickets for Round One of the AMA United States National Championship Series at Arrowhead on August 14 are now on sale. The AMA National Championship will be three rounds, with the final two rounds scheduled for Auburn.
