Ryan Fisher won all of his heat races and the Scratch Main to capture round two of the Victorville Winter Series at Wheel2Wheel Raceway on Saturday.
The Scratch Main featured three teenagers and former National Champion Charlie "The Edge" Venegas. Chris Kerr lined up on the pole, Bryan Yarrow was in gate two, Fisher was in gate three, and Venegas was on the outside. Venegas trapped his younger contemporaries and took the lead entering the first corner. Venegas held the lead and took a wide line entering three. Fisher followed the same line as Venegas until the exit of turn four when he cut back underneath Venegas and surged into the lead. Venegas stayed close enough to make it interesting, but had to contend with Yarrow, who was challenging for second. Yarrow went under Venegas entering turn three on the third lap to grab second. Fisher cruised to the victory, Yarrow held on to second, Venegas was third, and Kerr finished fourth.
The first of three preliminary rounds began with Venegas, who competed on the original Victorville track, getting an easy victory in his first race since the new track was built. Fisher, who was making his first appearance since the track was rebuilt, adapted well to the track and won handily. Yarrow, who was not new to the facility, finished the first round by cruising to the win.
The second round began with Yarrow holding off Mark Adams to earn his second win of the day. Fisher kept pace with Yarrow by defeating 16 year old Justin Boyle in the next race. Kerr scored an impressive victory over Venegas to finish round two.
The final round began with Fisher defeating Yarrow to keep his score perfect and earn a spot in the Scratch Main. Yarrow's eight points guaranteed him a spot in the main as well. Venegas defeated Boyle to bring his point total to eight and book his place in the main event. Kerr was victorious in the final preliminary heat and his eight points earned him the final place in the main.
Boyle gave a glimpse of his bright future by stalking Robert Mellor for two laps, then taking the lead and holding off veteran First Division rider Mark Adams to win the Scratch Consolation.
Geoff Herkner was perfect in his two heat races and was perfect in the main event as he rode four perfect laps to win the Second Division Main Event. Tomasz Hampel was second, DeWayne Stark finished third, and Jason Botsford was fourth.
Third-generation rider Dario Galvin was victorious in three of his four races to take the overall victory in First Division Youth Speedway racing. Tim Gomez had a race victory en route to second overall and Jason Ramirez scored three second place finishes to get third overall.
The Youth Second Division featured two second-generation racers and the younger brother of a current racer. Austin Novratil, son of Michael Novratil, took the overall victory. Dale Facchini, younger brother of Neil Facchini, was second overall. Tamara Krips, daughter of Bobby Krips, was third overall.
The rider turnout of 35, including five riders from Northern California, was quite impressive considering the ominous weather conditions that lingered all day. This was the second of a four-round winter series at the track. The next round is scheduled for Saturday, January 4.
