2003 Scott Brant

The Kelly Dunagan Racing Team swept both main event for the second week in a row as Scott Brant and Eddie Castro took home the gold from the Orange Show in San Bernardino Friday night.

Brant entered the Scratch Main having won the previous three at the track and his chances of winning again increased dramatically when he drew the pole. Brant launched out of the gate and into the lead entering turn one. His teammate, Castro, got in behind him on the back straight. Brant, who has dominated the competition at Orange Show in 2003, established some breathing room on lap two and remained in control the rest of the way to win his fourth straight Orange Show Scratch Main. Castro held on to second, Dukie Ermolenko was third, Gary Hicks finished fourth, and Randy DiFrancesco was fifth.

Two very impressive rides got George Fox into his first Handicap Main since returning from several years away from speedway. Fox led the pack on the first lap, but DiFrancesco slipped by on the inside as they began lap two. DiFrancesco led the next lap but the race was stopped when Brant went down in turn one. A complete restart was ordered with Brant starting at the back.

Fox led into turn one again, but DiFrancesco was the new leader on the back straight. Castro also moved under Fox and set his sights on DiFrancesco. DiFrancesco held the lead until hitting a hole on the fourth lap in turn four and going wide. That was all Castro needed and he went under DiFrancesco entering turn one. Castro pulled away for the win, DiFrancesco was second, Brant finished third, Ermolenko was fourth, and Fox finished fifth.

Rick Valdez jumped into the lead of the Support Main and held it through the first lap when trouble behind him stopped the race. Steve Murray was running second when he parked in turn two leaving Rudy Laurer and Neil Facchini nowhere to go and the result was a three-rider pileup. All riders were able to restart, but Murray would do so from the penalty line.

On the restart, Valdez was first to the corner again but Facchini gave chase on the first lap. As they entered turn one the second time Facchini went very wide and almost fell. By the time he recovered he was in fourth. Valdez suffered no such fate as he rode a superb race to win handily. Laurer was second, Murray finished third, and Facchini was fourth.

Greg Vandemore was the early leader in the Support B Main, but Carl Gazafy was quickly on his back tire. Vandemore went wide coming out of turn four on lap two and Gazafy made him pay for his mistake by taking the lead. Gazafy remained in control the rest of the way for the victory. Vandemore held on to second, Phil Harmatiuk was third, Michael Hernandez finished fourth, Steve Dziadus was fifth, and Kim Stevens finished sixth.

It was announced that the next four meetings at the Orange Show have been canceled. That, coupled with the two weeks that were already dark, means that there will be no racing there until Friday, August 8 when the Freestyle Motocross Jumpers make their second appearance.
