Industry Hills Speedway The Grand Industry Hills Expo Center City of Industry, California
2004 Season Finale
September 29, 2004 - Industry Hills Speedway
By: Ryan Evans
Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz brought the curtain down on the Industry Hills season by winning the Scratch Main on Wednesday.
Schwartz started from the pole and was first to turn one, but Bryan Yarrow made a good start from the outside and was on the outside shoulder of Schwartz as they came out of turn two. Schwartz kept his front tire glued to the pole and it paid off when he surged ahead at the end of lap one. Yarrow tucked in behind Schwartz and was within striking distance the entire race, but the ageless former National Champion was never fazed and was first to the checkered flag. Charlie Venegas finished third and Dukie Ermolenko was fourth.
Ermolenko began the qualifying heats by defeating Schwartz. Venegas beat Yarrow in the next heat. Shaun Harmatiuk held off Brad Sauer for the win in race nine. Denny Scopellite earned his first win by defeating J.T. Mabry at the end of the first round.
Harmatiuk started the second round with his second win of the evening. Nate Perkins held off Ermolenko for an impressive win in race 16. Schwartz scored his first victory by defeating Scopellite in the next race. Yarrow closed out round two with a win over fellow Northern California native Mabry.
Steve Murray was victorious at the start of the final round. Yarrow beat Schwartz for his second win of the evening. Ermolenko won for the second time in race 25. Scopellite scored his second victory to end the final round.
Ermolenko and Venegas finished first and second, respectively, to transfer to the main. In the second semi, Yarrow was victorious over Schwartz with both riders filling the final two spots in the main. Perkins earned his second victory of the evening by winning the Scratch Consolation.
John Stunkard led the Second Division Main Event for two laps, but Hideaki Ota went took over the lead on the back straight on the third lap. Ota concluded took the white flag, but Michael Hernandez fell in turn four and brought out the red flag. Ota was declared the winner, Stunkard was credited with second, Rudy Laurer was third, and Hernandez was fourth.
Greg Vandemore dominated the Third Division Main Event with four smooth laps to earn the victory. Steve Dziadus Jr. was second, Keith Mullally finished third, and Kerry Conner was fourth.
Wednesday's event brought a conclusion to the 2004 season at Industry Hills, but a 23-event 2005 season has already been announced with specific dates to be confirmed soon. There are also tentative plans to promote events during the winter and the Dukie Ermolenko Speedway Academy, as well as open practice sessions, will occur during the winter months.
