Ryan Fisher capped a perfect night by winning the Scratch Main Event in front of a large crowd on Harley Night at Costa Mesa.
Fisher entered the main event with the most points earning him the right to his gate position first. Fisher wisely chose the pole. When the tapes up it was Fisher away first but he drifted a little wide as he exited turn two. Nate Perkins tried to cut back underneath him on the back straight, but Fisher was able to get back to the inside line as they entered turn three. It proved to be Perkins' only chance as Fisher was perfect the rest of the way and was victorious. Perkins held on for second, Bobby Schwartz was third, Bryan Yarrow finished fourth, and Eddie Castro was fifth.
Round one of the all-scratch format began with Charlie Venegas holding off Schwartz for the win in the first race. Mike Faria worked his way past a very game Skyler Greyson to win race two. Yarrow was victorious over Shawn McConnell in the third race. Fisher completed the opening round with his first win of the night.
Perkins beat Schwartz to start the second round. Faria won his second straight race ahead of Shaun Harmatiuk in race ten. Randy DiFrancesco won the next race, but Venegas brought the crowd to its feet with an impressive outside ride. Fisher ended round two with a win over Castro.
Yarrow earned his second win of the night by handing Schwartz his third consecutive second place finish. Faria scored his third straight win in race 17. Buck Blair got a much-needed victory over Harmatiuk in the next race. Fisher finished off the heats with a win to keep his perfect score intact.
Yarrow had issues as the riders staged for the first semi when his bike caught fire. The fire was extinguished quickly, but he would have to compete on a backup machine. Fisher got the start and the win with Perkins following him to the main event. Schwartz gated the field in the second semi and took the victory with Castro getting second, but the shocker was that Faria finished fifth and didn't even transfer to the Last Chance. Yarrow easily won the Last Chance to fill the final spot in the main.
Michael Hernandez dominated the Support Main Event for the second week in a row. Steve Murray finished second and Rudy Laurer was third.
The Support B Main Event required three attempts, but Ryan Tovat kept his composure and led the final attempt from start to finish for the win. Vince Giamformaggio was second, Justin Hassan finished third, Matt McBride was fourth, Monte McKeon was fifth, and Steve Dziadus Jr. was credited with sixth.
Next Saturday is the ninth annual Jack Milne Cup. The event honors the 1937 World Champion who helped found Costa Mesa Speedway and was key to its long-term success. Mike Faria has won the event the last two years. Other former Milne Cup winners expected to be on the program include Bobby Schwartz, Gary Hicks, and Charlie Venegas.
