Charlie “The Edge” Venegas doubled his pleasure by winning the Scratch Main Event and the Last of the Mohicans Last Man Out Challenge at Industry Speedway.
Venegas started on the pole in the Scratch Main and made the best start. Venegas led down the back straight, but Ricky Wells used a shrewd move exiting turn two and chased Venegas down the back straight. Venegas held the lead at the end of lap one but the Under 21 National Champion was gaining ground. Both riders would enter the corner on a similar line, but Wells was cutting the corner a little tighter on exit. Wells got close to the leader on several occasions, but couldn’t find a way past. Venegas was first to the checkered flag for the seventh time this season, Wells settled for second, Buck Blair was third, Bobby Schwartz finished fourth, and Shawn McConnell was fifth.
Blair kicked off the heats with a win over McConnell. Venegas led Schwartz all the way for his first win. Wells ended round one with a win ahead of Jason Ramirez.
Round two started with John Marquez taking the win in front of Schwartz and Wells. McConnell came from the back to earn the victory. Neil Facchini was leading event 20 for three laps before Blair made a thrilling outside pass to take the lead and his second straight win.
The third round began with Venegas scoring a runaway win. Wells was awarded the victory in event 26 after a crash brought out the red flag. Travis Henderson beat McConnell in the final heat of the evening.
Wells was leading the first semi with Marquez holding second in front of Blair. Blair and Marquez battled into turn four with Marquez ending up in the wall. Marquez suffered a broken foot and was unable to restart. The restart was less dramatic as Wells led Blair the entire distance.
Venegas cruised to the win in the second semi and Schwartz held off McConnell for second and the transfer to the main event. McConnell was victorious in the Last Chance to book the final spot in the main.
Henderson and Marquez were the first two riders eliminated in the Last of the Mohicans Last Man Out Challenge, which left Venegas and Wells for the final, two-lap battle. Venegas led into turn one, but Wells put pressure on the former National Champion on the inside. Venegas held his ground and led through lap one. Wells tried to cut back underneath the leader coming out of turn two, but made contact with Venegas and the 16 year old lost all his momentum. Venegas took the win and Wells was second.
“Rattlesnake” Steve Bowen led the Second Division Main Event into turn one, but went wide and handed the lead to Bryan Buffington. The red flag came out, though, when Kim Stevens fell in turn four. Bowen was first out of the gate in the restart and led for nearly two laps, but he drifted out near the wall in turn four and Buffington went by on the inside. Bowen tried to regain the lead, but Buffington led to the finish. Dylan Black finished third and Stevens was fourth.
Ron Mongenel put together four smooth laps and won the Third Division Main Event for the second time in 2008. Tim McGrath finished second, Bruce Marteney was third, and Paul Thornton finished fourth.
Gino Manzares got the best start in the Youth Main Event, but Austin Novratil found enough traction on the outside to take the lead on the back straight. The drama ended there as Novratil pulled away for the win. Manzares was second, Joey Holt finished third, and Brad Pappalardo was fourth.
Nicky Reimer overcame a 30 yard handicap on the first lap and won the Pee Wee Main Event ahead of James Walter.
Next Wednesday is Kids Night at Industry Speedway. All spectators under the age of 12 will be admitted for free.
