Under 21 National Champion Ricky Wells came from behind to win his second Industry Speedway Scratch Main Event of the season on Toyota Speedway of Irwindale Night at The Grand.
Buck Blair started in gate one and used it to his advantage to lead into turn one. Wells started in gate three and entered the corner a little wider than Blair but cut back sharply coming out of turn two. Wells, who turns 17 on Sunday, charged up the inside of Blair and seized the lead entering turn three. Blair tried in vain to reel the leader in but Wells extended his lead with each lap and was first to the checkered flag. Eddie Castro was third, Neil Facchini finished fourth, and Brad Sauer was credited with fifth after being excluded for touching the tapes.
The heats kicked off with an exciting race between Wells and Castro. Wells led before going wide and letting Castro go underneath for the lead on lap two. Wells re-passed Castro with an inside move on the next lap and held on for the win. Jimmy Fishback was running away with the next heat when he fell and handed the lead, and the win, to Sauer. Facchini led the final race of the first round before lifting badly and allowing Russell Green to slip by. Green led from there for his first win of the evening.
Jason Ramirez began the second round by falling down hard while leading. Ramirez was able to restart, but Facchini scored his first win. Bobby Schwartz held off Wells to win the next heat. Fishback completed round two with a win over Castro.
Green started the final round by earning his second win of the night. Ramirez beat Blair and Schwartz in the next heat. Wells got his second win in the final heat of the evening.
Facchini handily won the first semi with Sauer following him into the main event. Wells ran away with the second semi with Castro finishing second. Blair got a great start from gate three and won the Last Chance.
Allen Doss continued his recent domination of Second Division by winning the main event for the third consecutive week. Steve Bowen finished second, Brad Moreau was third, Kim Stevens finished fourth, and Blake Bowen was fifth.
The Third Division Main Event featured the most action of any race all night. Ron Mongenel led the first lap until going wide in turn four and allowing Tim McGrath to take over. McGrath relinquished the lead to Bruce Marteney on the back straight. McGrath took the lead back in the same spot on lap three and led to the white flag. Chris Thomas went under McGrath entering turn one, thus ensuring every participant led in the race. It proved to be the final lead change as Thomas led to the checkered flag and scored his first main event victory. McGrath finished second, Marteney was third, and Mongenel finished fourth.
Gino Manzares led all four laps and held off every challenge that Austin Novratil could muster to win the Youth First Division Main Event. Novratil settled for second, Joey Holt was third, and Brad Pappalardo finished fourth.
Rocco Scopellite was the early leader of the Youth Second Division Main Event, but was under fire from River McDougall. McDougall kept the pressure on before falling on the third lap and Scopellite cruised to the victory from there. Samuel Ramirez was second, and McDougall remounted and finished third.
Nicolas Varner started 60 yards back but worked through the traffic to win the Pee Wee Main Event. Nicky Reimer, who started nearly a half lap back, finished second, Matthew Duffy was third, Trenton Hunt finished fourth, Christie Cameron was fifth, and Dean Cameron finished sixth.
Joe Jones and Jimmy Olsen led all four laps en route to victory the Sidecar Main Event. Dave Alexander and Matt Davis were second, Tommy Thornton and Steven Bumpus finished third, Gerard Jackson and Dave German were fourth, and Scott Driggers and Sean Driggers were credited with fifth.
