Victorville Speedway Wheel2Wheel Raceway Victorville, California
Border Patrol 70's Night
July 26, 2008 - Victorville
By: Steve Evans
Buck Blair rode to a perfect 5 wins out of 5 at the 'Border Patrol 70's Night' at Wheel 2 Wheel Raceway. Blair had 1st gate pick and opted for gate 4. Surprise late entry Jimmy Fishback chose 3. Neil Facchini, LCQ winner went for the pole, leaving comeback sensation Tony Bienert off 2. The 1st running got as far as turn two as Fishback charged hard under last week's winner, Facchini, with Facchini being thrown off the high side hard. He was able to take his place in the re run, where Blair gated and Fishback was left in fourth place after the bike lifted from the line. Bienert was in 2nd. Fishback began a dramatic charge, 1st picking off Facchini and then Bienert, but Blair was holding a perfect line and held on to his victory well.
There were 9 heats as each of the 9 man D1 field got 4 outings to secure points in the all scratch format. The first heat saw Blair lead home Dale Facchini. Then Fishback, on only his 2nd ever visit to W2W Led Gomez home in event 5. Event 8 saw Fishbcak fall while in the lead, giving Dale Facchini the win. Lyons got 2nd and Fishback got third after Sonnier's bike failed. Event 11 Blair lead home Gomez, while Fishback, riding with a shoulder injury after his earlier fall, led Facchini home in #12. Race 16 saw Blair get 3 out of three from Neil Facchini. Gomez won a close thriller from Bienert and Dale Facchini in #17. The big two came together in #23 with Blair leading home Fishback, while Tony Bienert got a lightening gate to edge out a determined Gomez in event 24. The top 2 of Blair, and Fishback were seeded straight to the Main, with 3-6 in pints going to the LCQ, 1st and 2nd also going to the Main. Bienert once more gated in the LCQ, leaving Neil Facchini ahead of
Gomez in a close 3 man duel. Gomez fell on lap three while Facchini charged under Bienert in the race to the line to secure a thrilling win.
Gino Manzares, riding a 250, charged under double heat winner Dylan Black to win a patched up D2 program.
Tony DeAlmeida was steady all night and won all 3 D3 events, including the Main.
River McDougal rode a stunning 4 laps in just his 5th speedway outing to lead home Joey Holt in the Junior Main event.
Nicky Varner, a faller in the 1st staging, won the PW50 Main from the penalty line.
Dave Alexander and Matt Davis led home a hard charging Joe Jones & Jimmy Olson in a thrilling 3 way Sidecar battle.
One other result that will be of interest to speedway fans was 17 year Krystal Cramer winning her 1st 500cc Speedway Sprint Main.
Next action at Wheel 2 Wheel Raceway is this coming Saturday, August 2nd at 6pm, featuring Skirt Night and a special holeshot challenge, which will be the shortest speedway race ever! Weekly action wraps up on August 9th with the biggest race of the year with the Speedway Track Championships.
