Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (NASCAR Demo)
August 5, 2009 - Industry Speedway
By: Ryan Evans
Gary Hicks started slow, but closed his evening with a vengeance and won his second straight main event and fifth overall at Industry Speedway.
Shawn McConnell entered the main event undefeated and had the cherished gate one. McConnell and Hicks gated together, but Hicks cut a tighter corner and exited turn two inside of McConnell. The duo was bar-to-bar on the back straight, but Hicks, who started his evening with two third-place finishes, had the preferred inside line entering turn three and took the lead while McConnell was forced wide enough to allow the rest of the field through. Jimmy Fishback assumed second place, but Hicks was comfortably in front and cruised to the victory. Tommy Hedden finished third, Charlie Venegas was fourth, and McConnell finished fifth.
Fishback kicked off the heats with a win over Russell Green. Hedden followed that with a victory of his own over Tyson Burmeister in the second heat. McConnell ended round one with a win over Gino Manzares.
Venegas began round two by beating Manzares. McConnell made it two in a row with a win over Green. Hedden closed the second round with his second straight victory ahead of Bobby “Boogaloo” Schwartz.
McConnell started the final round by winning his third consecutive heat. Hicks beat Fishback to finally get on the winning track. Schwartz defeated Jason Ramirez in the final heat. Manzares beat Green in a runoff to fill the final spot in the semis.
Hedden and Hicks finished one-two in the first semi to claim spots in the main event. In the second semi, McConnell led Fishback all the way into the main event. Venegas trapped the field from the outside and won the Last Chance to book the final spot in the main.
Drew Coats led from start to finish and claimed victory in the Second Division Main Event. Butch Waymire was second, Bruce Marteney finished third, and Chris Thomas was fourth.
Brad Moreau won all his heats and dominated the Third Division Main Event. Rod Requejo finished second, DeWayne Stark was third, Paul Thornton finished fourth, and Rick Huspek was credited with fifth.
Rocco Scopellite held off Kyle Hicks to win the Youth First Division Main Event.
Hayley Perrault got the best start in the Youth Second Division Main Event and had Maxwell Ruml challenging her on the outside. Nicky Reimer made a bold move in turn four and went past both riders to take the lead at the end of lap one. Reimer never looked back from there and claimed the win. Perrault finished second, Maxwell Ruml was third, and Dillon Ruml finished fourth.
Reimer doubled his pleasure by winning the Pee Wee First Division Main Event as well. Victoria Matthews finished second, Brian Pintar was third, Matthew Duffy finished fourth, and Nick Varner was fifth.
Dean Cameron was victorious in the Pee Wee Second Division Main Event with Wyatt Cameron finishing second, Jimmy Fishback IV getting third, and Christy Cameron finishing fourth.
Joe Jones and Ari Gardner passed Sean Driggers and Missy Driggers on the second lap to take the lead and the win in the Sidecar Main Event. Gerard Jackson and Dave German finished second and the Driggers duo finished third.
