2009 IMS Firecracker Derby

Former National Champion “Flyin” Mike Faria captured the Firecracker Derby Championship with a perfect night at Inland Motorsport Speedway in San Bernardino.
“Fast” Eddie Castro was leading the main event for nearly a lap, but the previously undefeated Tyson Burmeister went down in turn four and brought out the red flag. Burmeister was excluded from the restart. When the riders lined up again, Castro’s luck went from bad to worse when he got into the tapes and was excluded. The third time the riders came to the tapes Faria made the best start with Jimmy Fishback and John Marquez in pursuit. Fishback remained close to but never close enough to force a mistake. Faria was flawless the entire way and crossed the finish line first. Fishback finished second and Marquez was third.
Marquez opened the heats with a win over Neil Facchini. Fishback beat Castro for his first win. Burmeister beat Shawn McConnell for his first victory in the next heat. Faria finished round one with his first win.
Marquez started round two with his second straight win. Burmeister made it two for two with a win over Castro. Faria won his second consecutive race by beating Tim Gomez. McConnell ended the second round with a victory over Fishback.
Castro began the third round by beating Marquez. Faria beat McConnell for his third straight win. Gomez defeated Fishback to win the next heat. Burmeister ended round three by beating Dukie Ermolenko20for his third consecutive victory.
Marquez started the final round with a win over McConnell for an impressive third win and a spot in the main. Fishback defeated Facchini for his second win. Burmeister remained perfect by beating Gomez and took a direct transfer to the main. Faria ended the heats by matching Burmeister’s perfect score to make the main.
Fishback led McConnell for two laps in the Last Chance before Castro came roaring around both riders on lap three to take the lead and the victory and received a thunderous ovation from the appreciative crowd. Fishback held on to second to join Castro in the main.
Drew Coats led the Second Division Main Event for nearly four laps, but Josh Abbott=2 0slipped past the leader as they took the white flag. Abbott led the final lap to secure the victory. Coats settled for second, Butch Waymire was third, Rick Valdez finished fourth, Steve Bowen was fifth, and Rohn Zellner finished sixth.
Geoff Herkner, who hadn’t raced in several years, made a triumphant return to speedway racing by winning the Third Division Main Event. DeWayne Stark finished second, Ralph Chudy was third, and Rick Huspek finished fourth.
New Zealand’s Bradley Wilson led all four laps to win the Youth Main Event. Samuel Ramirez finished second, Rocco Scopellite was third, Maxwell Ruml finished fourth, Nicky Reimer was fifth, Dillon Ruml finished sixth, and Jacob Wondolowski was seventh.
Reimer was victorious in the Youth Main Event with Wondolowski finishing in second,20William Ballasteros getting third, Brian Pintar finishing in fourth, and Gino Scopellite finishing fifth.
