Yarrow takes Scratch Main by Inches

AUBURN, CALIFORNIA, JULY 30, 2010

Bryan Yarrow seems to have come alive in the second half of the 2010 Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway season at Auburn’s Gold Country Fairgrounds, showing up in a big way, and putting in a great riding performance Friday night. Yarrow became only the third rider to beat Billy Janniro in a scratch main event this season.

Lining up in Friday night’s Division I scratch main event filled with talented veterans, Yarrow drew the inside lane one next to Janniro in lane two, Charlie Venegas in lane three and Bart Bast in lane four. It was on as soon as the tapes went up as Yarrow and Janniro were battling in a race that has to go down has one of the best scratch main events of the 2010 season.

Yarrow found the inside line in turn one and held his ground as Janniro kept trying to take him on the outside in turn after turn for all four laps. Racing so close, as only veteran riders can, with only inches separating them, Yarrow held on as Janniro kept working him on the outside trying to pull ahead. Coming out of turn four and powering toward the finish line in a race that had the Fast Friday’s crowd on their feet, Janniro appeared to catch Yarrow by mere inches and was given the checkered flag. Janniro took his victory lap only to have Yarrow be declared the winner by Fast Friday’s referee Shawn Eldredge in a call that will be debated by speedway diehards for the rest of the season. Janniro was second, Bast was third and Venegas fourth.

Yarrow also was the winner of round four of the Challenge Elimination Series, again beating Janniro in another hard fought excellent two lap finale. Yarrow will now join Venegas, Tommy Hedden, Scott Brant, and the winner of round five next week in the championship final on September 3. “My wife told me I was going to slow, so I turned it on a little bit,” said Yarrow. “That was the best main’s I’ve ever been in. In that last corner I thought we were both going to crash,” he said.

Division II had a surprise as Rachalle Kerr, a Fast Friday’s favorite who raced for 13 years at Fast Friday’s before retiring from active racing in 2007 made a return to racing. The 28 year-old Kerr, known as the “Young Tigress,” has been pitting for Division III’s Tori Hubbert, and was bit by the speedway racing bug and is making another go it. “I’m back, helping Tori test the bike, I starting finding I didn’t want to get off,” said Kerr. Kerr won her Division II heat race and finished fourth in the Division II main event.

The Division I handicap; main event was won by Kelly Kerrigan, Division II was won by Casey Cornilsen, Auburn’s Billy Parino took Division III, and the Youth main was won by Auburn’s Tyler Warren. Run What U Brung was again won by Jim Lewis.
