Billy Janniro again proved he is the man to beat at Fast Friday's Motorcycle Speedway Friday night taking the Division I scratch main event. In week four of the 2011 Fast Friday's season, Janniro has been the fastest man of the night three of the four meetings so far this season at Auburn's Gold Country Fairgrounds track. Again, the final race of the night shaped up to be a two man battle fought in the inside lane between Janniro and Auburn's Bart Bast. Bast won the scratch main opening night and has finished second to Janniro each week since. Janniro drew lane four but getting an excellent gate start was still able to beat all riders to the inside lane just ahead of JT Mabry who came out of lane one. Bast soon took Mabry and again found himself in a familiar position just off Janniro's rear wheel trying to find a way to pass the 2010 USA National Speedway Champion. Janniro again skillfully held Bast just inches behind him for the final three laps to take the checkered flag for yet another week in a thrilling two-man duel. Bast finished second, Mabry was third, and Charlie Venegas who rolled in lane two at the start line was disqualified.
Longtime Division I veteran rider Devin Defreece ended a too long winner's podium drought by taking the handicap main event. The Benicia resident earned his first main event win since 2008. "I got a new bike this year, I'm not really doing much different except I came to race this year," said Defreece.
Defreece outlasted Bobby Hedden who finished second and Bryce Starks who took third. Hedden, semi-retired, only rides a couple times a year after being seriously injured racing several years ago, celebrated his 40th birthday by getting back on a speedway bike, and not losing much off his game rode impressively.
Division II is really heating up this season with several riders turning it up a notch or two. Ryan Bast who won the Division II main event two weeks ago, proved to be the man to beat in this division, beating Auburn's Mike Achilles who won last week's Division II main event. Bast, racing from the 10 yard line this week, is perfect so far this year winning the main event each week he's competed. Richard Fuhrman, always in the running and can win any night, was third. Division III was won by Tyler Warren, Chris Casey finished second and Billy Vaughn was third. Warren is now has three out four wins in Division III main events this season. David Marsaroli won the Youth A main event and Luke Becker captured the Youth B main event.
Fans that braved the unseasonal weather got in on a great night of speedway racing at Fast Friday's. Next Friday night watch for the return of the sidecar series, and on Saturday a special speedway racing program at Folsom's Dan Russell Arena including a second edition of sidecar action.
