If you could just attend one race of the 2011 Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway season, Friday night at Auburn's Gold Country Fairgrounds would have been a good pick. For the near sell-out crowd, Fast Fridays had everything a speedway fan could have hoped for, fast thrilling racing action, come from behind near photo finishes, and the third of four season appearances of the wild ones riding in the Extreme Sidecar Series.
Bryan Yarrow, back on his game in a big way, captured the fastest man of the night title. The twenty-six-year old Yarrow found a great way to celebrate his 7th wedding anniversary by beating Billy Janniro, Bart Bast, and Chris Kerr in the Division I scratch main event. Yarrow injured his ankle last October and was just cleared to resume racing in late June. He has wasted little time picking up from where he left off last year. "It's great to win again," said Yarrow. "I'm having a lot more fun this year, I not taking it so serious, I come here with a clear head and just go has fast as I can go," he said. Yarrow drew the inside lane one and was able to hold off Bast, Janniro and Kerr. Yarrow led for the four laps, working the inside of the track perfectly, forcing Janniro, Bast, and Kerr to go high in the deeper part of the track to pass. Janniro usually likes to race higher on the track passing on the outside, but on this night it was Yarrow that took the checkered flag. Bast was second, Janniro was third and Kerr fourth.
The Division I handicap main event was an exciting race with a restart after Tommy Hedden and JJ Martynse tangled hard in turn three with both riders going down. In the restart Billy Janniro was able keep out in front of a hard charging Alex Marcucci and Bart Bast to notch the win, his sixth handicap main event win of the season. Marcucci was second and Bast was third.
In the Division II main event Ryan Bast thrilled the crowd by pulling off a stunning come from behind win, stealing the race from Richard Fehrman by mere inches. Bast made his move on the last turn with a burst of power to edge ahead of Fehrman at the finish line. Fehrman was second and Casey Cornilsen was third.
Division III was full of spills and several restarts. Rider Chris Casey unfortunately crashed through the pit wall and was injured unable to continue racing. When the dust settled it was Kevin Chapman who put together the win, newcomer Luke Campbell was second, and Nick Dion was third.
The Youth A main event was won by Tanner Kane, followed by Jamison Dilkey in second and David Marsaroli in third. In the Youth B main event Luke Becker was first, Daniel Casey was second and Colton Hicks third.
The Extreme Sidecar Series made its third of four stops this season at Fast Fridays with a crowd pleasing and always thrilling show. Riding in teams on 1000cc three wheeled motorcycles with no brakes, the team of Joe Jones and Brandi McElroy won the sidecar main event. Also racing were the teams of Gerard Jackson and Dave Gorman, Scott and Casey Driggers, and Shawn and Melyssa Driggers.
Next week the exciting speedway action continues at Fast Fridays with the final round of the Challenge Elimination Series when the fifth and final spot will be filled for the Challenge Series Championship on September 2.
