For the fourth time this season current USA National Speedway champion Billy Janniro scored main event wins in both the Division I handicap and scratch programs at Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway at Auburn's Gold Country Fairgrounds. Janniro worked for this one though and the wins were hard fought and without the near flawless riding style he normally exhibits. The scorecard at the end of the evening showed Janniro won the main events all his heat races in both programs but it wasn't an easy night for the champ.
In the handicap main event, racing off the 60-yard line, Janniro crashed twice, once laying his bike down in turn one on the second lap bringing down Tommy Hedden and Bart Bast, as they avoided a crash. A single line restart then put Janniro in the back with his work was cut out for him. Working the entire track on each remaining lap Janniro soon made it a two-man race with Bast. Bast held his ground but on the last turn swung a little wide and Janniro took advantage of the opportunity and passed on the inside for the win. "I crashed twice in one race, I don't usually crash, I'm going to have to go back to the drawing board on this one," said Janniro. "Everything worked out in the end though, to crash twice and still win it," he said. Bast was second, Hedden was third and Chris Kerr was fourth.
In the scratch main event it was a little easier for Janniro as he drew the inside lane one. He faced Bast again who was in lane two, Charlie Venegas in lane three, and Bryan Yarrow in the outside lane four. Janniro got the best gate and was out in front with Yarrow, who was hot off last weeks scratch main event win, right on his tail. Janniro was not going to let anything get in his way and he put the hammer down for the victory. Yarrow was second, Bast third, Venegas was fourth. Janniro has four double, seven scratch, and seven handicap main event wins so far this season and has to be looking toward the 2011 National Speedway Championship on September 30 at Fast Fridays.
PJ Bryne picked up his third Division II main event win of the 2011 season since moving up from Division III on June 17. Michael Raines was second in his first appearance at Fast Fridays this season, and Kevin Chapman was third. Auburn's Will McCloskey picked up the Division III main event win. The twenty-year-old McCloskey, who started speedway racing this season is fast becoming a crowd favorite picked up his first main event win of the season. McCloskey has finished five times in the top three in Division III main events this season. Chris Casey, back on his bike after crashing through the pit wall last week, was second and Kevin Smith was third.
In an exciting round five two lap race Bob Hicks beat Tommy Hedden on the last turn to grab the last spot in the Challenge Elimination Series and will join Charlie Venegas, JT Mabry, Billy Janniro, and Bryce Starks for the championship round on September 2 at Fast Fridays.
The Youth A main event was won by Auburn's David Mersaroli, second was Tanner Kane, and third was Joseph Hernandez. In the Youth B main event Luke Becker again stood on the podium, second was Colton Hicks and third was Daniel Casey.
Next week at the FIM (International Motorcycle Federation) Under 21 World Qualifier and the USA Youth National Championships, along with full night of regular speedway action will be at Fast Friday's Motorcycle Speedway in Auburn.
