Industry Racing, CA, USA - August 22 Former World Champion Billy "The Bullet" Hamill topped another perfect evening by winning his eighth Industry Racing Scratch Main Event of the season and taking home the Last of the Mohicans Last Man Out Challenge Championship. Hamill's unbeaten night afforded him the opportunity to pick his starting position first in the main event and he chose gate one. Former National Champion Charlie "The Edge" Venegas selected gate two, former Under 21 National Champion Austin Novratil picked gate four, which left Tyson Burmeister with gate three. Hamill exploded from the tapes and led into turn one. Venegas led the triumvirate that chased the leader on the back straight. Hamill was unmoved by the throng of opponents chasing him and quickly established a sizeable lead. Venegas separated himself from Novratil and Burmeister to secure second but couldn't make an impact on Hamill's lead. Hamill was first to the checkered flag, Venegas finished second, Burmeister was third, and Novratil finished fourth. Aaron Fox kicked off the heat races with a win over Burmeister. Venegas held off "Battling" Buck Blair in the second heat for his first win. Hamill defeated "Fast" Eddie Castro in event three. Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell was awarded the victory to end the first round. Burmeister started the second round with a victory ahead of Venegas. Blair defeated Fox for his first win. Hamill made it two for two by beating Under 21 National Champion Gino Manzares. McConnell beat Novratil in the last heat of round two for his second straight win. Blair opened the final round of heats with a win over McConnell. Novratil got a much-needed win in event 24. Hamill remained perfect by defeating Fox. Venegas beat Castro to end the heats. Venegas held off a hard-charging Burmeister in the first semi as both riders moved on to the main event. Hamill easily won the second semi while Novratil made a shrewd move in turn two and took second to also transfer to the main. Blair led the Consolation before McConnell went underneath him on the second lap and took the win. The Last of the Mohicans Last Man Out Championship began with eight competitors in two elimination heats. Those heats whittled the field down to Hamill, Blair, Burmeister, and Venegas for the Final. Venegas was the first rider eliminated followed by Burmeister. The final, two-lap challenge was all Hamill as he made a great start from gate four and took the victory with Blair getting second. A crash on the first attempt to run the Second Division Main Event left Geoff Herkner and "Rattlesnake" Steve Bowen with bent machinery and on the sidelines for the restart. Danny Baker led from start to finish on the restart and won the main for the second week in a row. Tim McGrath finished second. Dan Eddy put together four smooth laps and was victorious in the Third Division Main Event. Paul Thornton finished second, Chris Wiggins was third, Rick Howard finished fourth, and Rick Huspek was fifth. The Youth 250cc Main Event required four starts and the final attempt began with three riders on the penalty line and one in the pits with a broken bike. Broc Nicol calmly held off Max Ruml for five laps for the win. Kurtis Hamill was third, Dillon Ruml finished fourth, Hayley Perrault was fifth, and Dalton Leedy was credited with sixth. After suffering a rare defeat during one of his heat races, Braydan Galvin worked through the traffic from his 70 yard handicap, passed Courtney Crone at the end of lap four, and went on to victory in the Youth 200cc Main Event. Crone held on for second, Michael Wells was third, Maverick Molloy finished fourth, Sebastian Palmese was fifth, and Tristan Britt was sixth. "Lightning" Luke Whitcomb defeated Jake Troutt to win the Pee Wee Main Event. Jeff Medberry and Josh Bennett scored an impressive victory in the Sidecar Main Event with Dave Alexander and Casey Driggers finishing second, Dylan Beard and Crystal Beard coming in third, and Dan Jones and Matt Davis getting fourth. The next event at Industry Racing is the 37th California State Championship and will bring an end to the 2012 season at the venue. Defending State Champion Billy "The Kid" Janniro will be trying to win his third straight title. Former State Champions Venegas, Schwartz, and "Flyin" Mike Faria are also slated to be a part of a 20-rider program that will include McConnell, Castro, Manzares, Burmeister, Novratil, Blair, Fox, and Northern California's Tommy Hedden. The 42-year old two-time 500cc Speedway Cycle World Champion from Carlsbad won all three of his Division 1 heat races, his semi-final and the four rider, four-lap main event. It was his ninth feature victory at the track this season. He missed one week to race with the USA team in Poland. Hamill led every lap he raced Wednesday. He shot from the inside lane into the lead when the starting gate lifted and won by 15-yards over past track champion Charlie Venegas. Tyson Burmeister was ten yards in back of the runner-up. Under age 21 2011 National Champion and 2009-10 Youth National Champion Austin Novratil, 17, was15-yards back in fourth position. Burmeister took third place from Novratil's No. 27 Jawa cycle on the second lap. Shawn McConnell won the 500cc Division 1 consolation race after passing leader Buck Blair during lap 2 on the inside in the fourth turn. Hamill also won the special "Last of the Mohicans Last Man Out Challenge Championship" season finale. Eight Division 1 riders were divided into two elimination heats. Fans John Saddlemire and Mike Zakrzeski posted $1,000 cash for the event, which was the 20th race run on a busy night with 40 rapid races. The last place rider after lap 1 and then lap 2 went to the sidelines in each elimination heat. The first two finishers in each elimination heat met in the final Mohican race. Riders from the inside to outside lanes were: feature winners Burmeister, Hamill, Venegas and Blair. Hamill led all four laps, with Venegas eliminated after the first lap. Riders were repositioned in different lanes for lap 2; third place Burmeister was sidelined. Then the final two laps had Blair starting in lane two and Hamill from lane four. Hamill won the dash to the first turn, led both laps and won the lion's share of the bonus money by ten yards. With seven of the powerful 1,000cc Yamaha and Suzuki sidecar teams present, the four highest in points after two rounds of heat races raced a four-lap feature in their usual clockwise direction. Jeff Medberry, of Ontario, and his sidecar swinger Josh Bennett, of Placentia, led all the way for their first sidecar feature triumph on their yellow No. 44. The Dave Alexander/Casey Driggers team followed. The other two teams were sidelined by rule for putting two wheels into the infield while passing. Danny Baker, of Covina, captured another 500cc Division 2 main for intermediate level riders. He was the only finisher after two crashes felled the other three riders, including P. 2 Tim McGrath. Third year racer Dan Eddy, 48, from Temecula, won his first 500cc Division 3 feature for newer speedway riders. Broc Nicol, 14, of Torrance, led all five laps of a six-rider Youth 250cc main. Braydan Galvin, 14, of Corona, started 50-yards from the starting gate in the 200cc Youth feature and led the final two laps over L 1-3 leader Courtney Crone, 11. Anaheim's Luke Whitcomb, 6, started 50-yards from the gate and led the final three laps over rookie Jake Troutt, 4. It was "Lightning Luke's" eighth main event victory this season. His father Wade, a Baptist minister in Garden Grove, raced the No. 227 Weslake cycle in 500cc Division 3 races at Industry last season. He also raced the No. 27Z flat track cycle on ovals such as Ascot Park. Current Division 1 rider and past youth division winner Gino Manzares, who turned 19 two days earlier, won the Under age 21 National Championship Friday, August 17 at Fast Fridays Speedway in Auburn. The Corona resident rode his No. 24 Jawa cycle and won the six-race battle with a near perfect 17 out of a possible 18 points in a 12-rider field. Two-time U-21 National Champion Bryce Starks, of Auburn, scored 15 points and placed second. Huntington Beach resident Novratil finished third with 14 points. Russell Green also raced and came close to making the four-rider feature race. The weekly 50/50 cash drawing winner Wednesday donated the fan share to female sidecar "swinger" Crystal (Laurie) Beard, who returned to sidecar racing this week after she broke an arm bone in a crash earlier this year. She raced with her husband Dylan, of Oak Hills, on their red No. 5150 sidecar and won two heat races. The Beards were in third place before dropping out of the sidecar feature when their rig dropped two wheels into the infield, an automatic disqualification. Next Wednesday (August 29) will conclude the ninth season of racing at Industry Speedway with the 37th running of the California State Speedway Championship. Twenty heat races for 20 top rated Division 1 riders will determine the 2012 California champion based on accumulated points during the evening. Industry 2012 track champion Hamill will not race next Wednesday. He said he will be practicing next week and competing in a road racing motorcycle event at Miller Motor-sports Park in Toolle, Utah. That leaves the state title race wide open. Already entered are Fast Friday Speedway stars Billy Janniro, Tommy Hedden and Mike Faria. Support divisions will be racing as well. |
