2012 Kelly Moran Memorial - San Bernardino, CA, USA - September 14
Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell continued his recent hot streak by winning the Kelly Moran Memorial for his third straight main event victory at Inland Motorcycle Speedway in San Bernardino.
The first time the tapes went up in the main event the red light quickly came on and the referee ruled that former World Champion Billy "The Bullet" Hamill was moving at the start. Despite Hamill's protests, the referee penalized him 20 yards for the restart. McConnell was leading the second attempt when Tyson Burmeister went down in turn three and the red light came on again. Burmeister joined Hamill on the penalty line for the third attempt. McConnell took the lead from the start again with Aaron Fox chasing after him. McConnell hugged the inside line while Fox searched high and low for a way past. McConnell was cool under the constant pressure and calmly led his younger competitor to the finish line. "Battling" Buck Blair finished third, Burmeister finished fourth, and Hamill had a mechanical problem that relegated him to fifth
Hamill kicked off the heats with a win over Blair. Burmeister defeated Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz in the second heat. McConnell beat Fox to end the first round
Hamill started the second round by defeating Tyson Talkington for his second straight win. McConnell held off Blair to win event 15. Steve Russell finished round two with an impressive win over Fox.
Blair defeated Talkington to begin the final round of heats. Burmeister beat Fox for his second win. Hamill finished off the heats by beating McConnell to remain undefeated.
McConnell and Blair finished one-two in the first semi and transferred to the main. Burmeister won the second semi with Hamill, despite suffering his first defeat of the night, following him to the main. Fox won the Last Chance to complete the main event field.
Mitch Pierson led the Support Main Event from start to finish and collected the victory. Davey Shaw finished second, Joey St. Louis was third, Ron Davis finished fourth, Stephen Simrak was fifth, and Geoff Herkner finished sixth.
Kurtis Hamill put together four smooth laps and was victorious in the Youth 250cc Main Event. Dalton Leedy finished second and Hayley Perrault was third.
Dryden LeoGrande was the initial leader of the Youth 200cc Main Event. Dryden LeoGrande led through the second lap but Braydan Galvin was closing fast. Galvin took the lead on the back straight and never looked back en route to victory. Dryden LeoGrande held on to second, Michael Wells finished third, Courtney Crone was fourth, and Dryden Gayle finished fifth.
Jake Troutt led the Pee Wee Main Event but went wide at the end of lap one which allowed Jonas LeoGrande to take over. Jonas LeoGrande steadily pulled away and led to the finish. Troutt was second and Julia Pierson finished third.
The first start of the Sidecar Main Event ended with passenger Johnny Glover on the ground in turn three and then scrambling off the track to escape disaster. Joe Jones and Glover were penalized for the restart. Dylan Beard and Crystal Beard made the best start and led the first lap while Joe Jones and Glover were scrambling to pose a challenge. The Beards continued to lead as they took the white flag and had Joe Jones and Glover within striking distance. The leaders never wavered and held on for the victory. Joe Jones and Glover had to settle for second, Chris Jones and Brandi McElroy were third, and Jeff Medberry and Josh Bennett finished fourth.
The next event at IMS is Harley Night on Friday, September 28. The event will have all divisions of speedway and the street-legal Harley races.
