With the exception of a third place finish in a handicap semi-final race Billy Janniro was flawless Friday at Auburn's Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway winning everything else. At the Gold Country Fairgrounds for the second time this season Janniro won both the Division I handicap and scratch main events. This feat has been accomplished by just one other rider this season. Janniro, arguably one of the best American speedway riders to ever take up the sport, also won a spot in the Challenge Elimination Series Championship on August 30 by winning round four of the series.
In the Division I scratch main event Janniro went up against Bart Bast who won the main event last week, Bob Hicks and Bryan Yarrow the only other rider to score double main event victories this season. Drawing lane two Janniro was a little high on the track in turn one but immediately locked into the inside lane and held his position. In pursuit was Hicks who at a point was within striking distance as Yarrow and Bast trailed. Janniro, using all the power he could pull from his bike and riding perfectly, Janniro put some distance between Hicks and himself for the win. Hicks finished second, Yarrow third and Bast fourth.
The handicap main event was more of the same with Janniro riding off the 60-yard line. Janniro worked his way through the lower yardage traffic passing everyone except Tyler Warren who has been looking for his first handicap main event win. Off the zero line Warren did a superior job of holding off the skilled veteran until he faltered and let Janniro in to take the lead with just under a lap left. Bobbling for just a second on turn two on the last lap allowed Janniro to come inside and take the lead and the checkered flag. A frustrated Warren had to settle for second, followed by Bast in third. "Tyler Warren did real well, all he did was make just one mistake by going just a little bit wide and that gave me the room I needed," said Janniro. "It definitely feels good to win tonight," he said.
Janniro will join Yarrow, Tommy Hedden, Bryce Starks and the winner of the fifth round in the upcoming Challenge Elimination Championship at Fast Fridays. Janniro is fresh off winning the first round of the AMA Speedway National Championship series with a perfect performance at Ventura Raceway June 29 and looking forward to the second round in Victorville September 22. The final round will be at Fast Fridays on September 27.
Division II again saw a familiar name take the checkered flag. This time it was David Mersaroli winning the main event. Mersaroli along with his twin brother Louie moved up to Division II just four weeks ago and between them have recorded three first place finishes and one third place finish since. Derik Denzin was second and Chris Popanz third. In just his second week of racing at Fast Fridays Dorian Jewett reached the winner's podium in the Division III main event. Lawrence McNutt was second and Auburn's Glenn Scott was third.
Landon Norton won the Youth 150cc main event and for the second time in three weeks Gage Geist won the Youth 250cc division main event. Dylan Sudtell took the Run What U Brung event trophy.
Next Friday the popular North vs. South Speedway Challenge returns to Fast Fridays. Pitting six of the best Southern California riders against six of our best Northern California riders in an exciting classic speedway team scoring match-up for yearly bragging rights.
