Dress Like a Pirate Night - May 17 - San Bernardino, CA, USA Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell and Russell Green claimed main event victories on Dress Like a Pirate Night at Pirate Speedway in San Bernardino. The Olympique earned-handicap format was used to whittle the First Division field down to four competitors for the Scratch Main Event. Shawn McConnell made the best start from gate one and led the field through two laps before his son, Troy McConnell lifted exiting turn two and went down. The younger McConnell was unable to get up right away and the red flag came out. Troy McConnell was excluded from the restart but was able to walk off the track under his own power. Shawn McConnell led the restart while "Fast" Eddie Castro battled with Russell Green for second. Castro secured second place on lap two and set his sights on the leader. The diminutive rider stalked the track's copromoter the rest of the way but couldn't find enough traction to get past him. Shawn McConnell was first to the checkered flag, Castro settled for second, Green finished third, and Troy McConnell was credited with fourth. Troy McConnell blitzed Ron Davis in the first corner of the Handicap Main Event to take the lead. Troy McConnell wasn't able to breathe easy because Green was immediately breathing down his neck. Troy McConnell withstood the pressure into lap four before he succumbed to Green's persistence as they crossed the stripe the fourth time. Green dispatched one McConnell but had to contend with another as Shawn McConnell also passed Troy and was seeking a double main-event victory. Green calmly held the inside line and was first to the checkered flag. Shawn McConnell finished second, Castro was third, Joe Donaldson finished fourth, Ron Davis was fifth, and Troy McConnell was sixth. Wade Whitcomb led the Support Main Event field through turn one. Mike Fuson was picking off riders in wholesale fashion behind him and as they finished lap one he was in second. Fuson slipped past Whitcomb as they entered turn two the second time and took over the lead. Fuson never looked back from there and romped to victory. Dillon Osborne finished second, Davis was third, Steve "Beach Ball" Brown finished fourth, Whitcomb ended up fifth, and Kevin Fife was sixth. Junior National Champion Broc Nicol led from start to finish en route to victory in the Junior 250 Main Event. Hayley Perrault was second and Dalton Leedy finished third. Dryden LeoGrande was the initial leader of the Mini 150 Main Event but had Sebastian "Big Daddy" Palmese chasing after him. Palmese stalked Dryden LeoGrande for two laps before going around him the third time through turn two. Palmese raced away with the victory from there. Michael Wells finished second, Dryden LeoGrande was third, and Sara Cords finished fourth. Luke Whitcomb defeated Jonas LeoGrande in the Pee Wee First Division Main Event. Jake Troutt was victorious over Nick Dunn and Jason Palmese in the Pee Wee Second Division Main Event. Dual Anderson and Ethan Smith made the best start and withstood the onslaught of National Champions Joe Jones and Johnny Glover and won the Sidecar Main Event. Jeff Rowe and Johnny Bach finished third and Gerard Jackson and Dave German were fourth. Pirate Speedway will be hosting speedway the next two Fridays.
