Billy Janniro gave himself a great birthday present as America got set to celebrate Independence Day Friday night at Fast Friday Motorcycle Speedway in Auburn winning both the handicap main event and the scratch main event by convincing margins. Janniro, as of Friday is now 35 years old and is on a streak with not only the wins in Auburn but also main event wins at Industry Racing on Wednesday, and a main event win in the second round of the 2015 AMA USA Speedway Championship Series in Ventura Raceway on June 27. Janniro, the current and five time USA national champion leads the championship series after two rounds with 36 points just ahead of Max Ruml with 32 points.
In the scratch program Janniro was perfect and proved to be the fastest man of the evening with a win in the scratch finale and wins his heat race and semi-final. In the main event he drew lane three and faced Greg Hooten in lane one, Bryce Starks in two and Bart Bast in four. From the start Janniro got out front and laid it down. Janniro glanced over his shoulder several times to check on Bast and Hooten who were in a battle for second and third place but was never challenged. Hooten was second, Bast third and Starks suffered mechanical problems and did not finish.
In the handicap program riding off the 60 yard line Janniro was nearly as proficient with a third place finish in his heat race and first place finish in his semi to advance to the main. Working his way skillfully through traffic on a thick track that suits his riding style and catching Broc Nicol on the last lap, Janniro took the checkered flag for his first main event win of the evening. Nicol won the scratch main event last week at Fast Fridays and is currently in third place in the AMA USA Speedway Championship Series standings finished second, followed by Auburn’s Bob “Bad Boy” Hicks.
The youth program at Fast Friday’s consists of four divisions-two 150cc and 250cc divisions and a very popular pee-wee division. Currently a new crop of young impressive division one riders including Luke Becker, Max and Dillon Ruml, Broc Nicol, and veteran riders like Billy Janniro, Bart Bast and Bryce Starks all began their careers in the Youth divisions. These young riders come out every night working on their game hoping to be the next champion, improving their skills each week. Like any other sport it is in these leagues that the next champions are nurtured and their skills honed. It’s heartwarming to see these pint sized racers decked in their racing gear on the winner’s podium with big smiles and trophies nearly as tall as themselves after the races.
In the Youth A 250cc division, Auburn speedster Colton Hicks, destined to be a great up and coming division one rider someday, took the main event. Hicks’ skill level surpasses his age and at 13 years old he is very impressive and exciting to watch coming off back yardage each week to win races. In the Youth B 250cc division Sammy Tetrault picked up his first main event win of the Fast Fridays season. In the Youth A 150cc division a very excited Logan Hedden won his first main event of the season, stopping on his victory lap to throw his goggles to cheering fans in the stands. “It feel good to get it out of the way (the win), it brings back my confidence, I’m just really happy,” said a beaming eleven year-old Hedden after the races. The Youth B 150cc division was topped by Anthony Dion.
Shawn Eldredge won his first main event of the 2015 Fast Fridays season in the Division II program Friday night. Eldredge topped Lawrence McNutt who was second and Nick Dion who was third. “I’m what you call a bubble riders, I fill the program in division one and two, sometimes things go well,” said Eldredge. “It’s always good to have a win.” Speedway newcomer Cameron Beck of Foresthill, who states his speedway ambitions in his rider profile is to not go to the hospital, won the Division III main event. “I’m new to speedway, so every time I ride it’s something new, it was pretty awesome to win,” said Beck. After two restarts in the main event Beck started first in the restart line-up and held on for the win. Beck finished second on June 19, and is sure to be a player in the exciting DIII division. John Peters was second and John Gauthreaux was third.
The heart stopping Extreme Sidecars made their third appearance of the season at Fast Friday’s thrilling fans as they always do on their 1000cc three wheeled bikes. The team of Bryan Motis and Josh Bennett was able to hold off Joe Jones and Tom Summers in an exciting sidecar main event finish. “So far we have won two main events up here this year,” said Motis. Motis and Bennett who have teamed for three years and celebrated their win with 4th of July fireworks blazing on their victory lap. Dalton Leedy won the Trophy Lap.
