Maybe it was just fooling around having fun. Maybe it was the new tire and a perfect track. Maybe it was getting ready to defend his AMA National Speedway Championship in the third of four rounds Saturday night at the City of Industry. Maybe Billy Janniro didn’t even need a reason, but Friday night at Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway in Auburn at the Gold Country Fairgrounds “The Kid” again won both the handicap main event and the scratch main event for the third time this season. Perfect for the entire night, Janniro won every race in both programs, again establishing without a doubt he is the man to beat in this 2015 speedway season.
In the scratch main event Janniro drew lane four which for any other rider would have been a disappointment, for Janniro it was perfect. Tommy Hedden sat next to him in three, Auburn’s Bart Bast was in two and Luke Becker was on the pole in one. The new tire grabbed at the start and Janniro got a fantastic gate rocketing outside around all the riders who were fighting for the inside position. He continued to ride the thick dirt outside just powering around the Fast Fridays oval increasing his lead with every lap. A wheelie across the finish line and it was over. Bast motored in second followed by Becker in third and Hedden was fourth. “We just rode a little extra hard tonight,” Janniro said. “When I got gate four I was excited, the track was awesome, Dave (Joiner) has done a great job,” he said.
In the handicap main event Janniro also had little trouble coming off the 60 yard line, again on a thick track he so enjoys, weaving through traffic outside and inside to take the checkered flag without much trouble. On top of his game with the third round of the national championship series on his mind probably more than this night of racing, Janniro finished first ahead of Hedden in second place. Becker finished in third and Bart Bast was fourth. Janniro leads all riders in the national championship series with 36 points and also leads all riders in the Fast Friday’s season point’s race with 1673 followed closely by Bart Bast with 1599 before the August 7 meeting. All season rider points for all divisions can be found at www.fastfridays.com.
The ever popular Extreme Sidecar teams made another trip north from Southern California to race at Fast Fridays. The sidecars have a huge following in SoCal but thousands of diehard Fast Fridays fans show up for each visit to cheer on the 1000cc three wheeled racers. Joe Jones and Tom Summers won the main event, Bryan Motis and Gene Stone were second and the team of James Kinne and Chuck Heider were third.
Nick Dion finally found his way to winner’s podium Friday night in Division II. After a second place and four third place finishes this season the scrappy Dion put it together for the win. He currently sits second in the division two points race behind Eddie Marsalla and for sure will be in the running for the Fast Friday’s Division II track championship on September 11. Marsalla finished second, and Michael Achilles finished third.
Division III was won by newcomer Peter Pecorilla who has just seven speedway races under his belt. In his first season of speedway racing the good natured Pecorilla was all smiles after getting his trophy and being Division III’s top rider of the night. “I think that was my seventh race tonight, it’s my first win, I’ve been trying and after a couple of second, third and fourth place finishes, I’ll be on the 10 yard line next week,” Pecorilla said. I’m new to speedway but have rode motorcycles all my life, mostly desert endro and motor cross,” he said. Cameron Beck was second and Tim Dion was third.
Hands down Colton Hicks owns the Youth A 250cc division. Starting with nearly a half track handicap each week Hicks thrills the crowd with his come from behind finishes each week. Hicks finished ahead of Landon Norton who was second and Kyle Cunningham who was third. Anthony Dion again topped the Youth B 250cc division for the second week in a row. Sammy Tetrault was second and Rich Vandermeeden was third. Enzo Sorani was first in the Youth A 150cc division, Logan Hedden was second and Gregory Moore was third. Timmy Dion, the third Dion family member to win main events Friday night, won the Youth B 150cc main event. Second was Colton Nelson and third was Aidan McNutt. Eddie Marsalla won the trophy dash and Louie Mersaroli took the Run What U Brung main event.
