The stands were nearly filled Friday night at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn as the Extreme Sidecars made their 2016 season debut at Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway. Rained out for their first scheduled appearance in Auburn on May 20, the popular racing teams from Southern California did not disappoint. Five two rider teams on 1000cc three-wheeled motorcycles with no brakes thrilled the Fast Friday’s fans in three four lap races. The team of Joe Jones and Tom Summers survived a crash turn three on the first lap of the main event between teams Smylie Kinne and David Bernardo and Jeff Rowe and Chuck Heider to win the sidecar finale. The medics were with Bernardo for several minutes then took him from the track on a back board to be checked. Rowe and Heider went on to challenge Jones and Summers and finished in second place.
With 21 years of speedway experience and six AMA National Speedway championships under his belt, the Billy Janniro fan club might be wondered if the champ was maybe peaking in his racing career. Friday night, after missing last week while racing in Europe, the current national champion, dazzled the near capacity crowd at Fast Fridays in the scratch main event program with flashes of genius showing his fans there is much more to come in his stellar career.
Janniro roared around the track in the outside deep turf many times in a wheelie to be named the fasted man of the night. Two disqualifications in the finale made the contest a two- man event. Bart Bast got a little too much clutch at the start and his bike got away from him, causing a restart and for the second week in a row was disqualified from the scratch main event. Next, Charlie Venegas got going a little too soon breaking the start tapes and was also asked to leave the race. That left Luke Becker to try to take down the giant but from the start Janniro roared the four laps to the checkered flag as the crowd went wild. Becker put up a good fight, but had to settle for runner-up.
Racing weekly now at Fast Friday’s after recently relocating to Northern California Russell Green was in the money Friday night with a win in the handicap main event. Green, third in his handicap heat race, then won his semi-final heat before transferring to win the handicap main event. Handicapped on the 30 yard line, Green did an impressive job keeping ahead of the experienced Bart Bast to take the win. Bast was second, and Austin Novratil was third. It was the first main event win for Green this season. “Next week I will be on the 40, I have been riding the hardest I can with what I have got-borrowed equipment, it’s my first main event win of the season, hopefully there is more to come,” Green said.
Special guest at Fast Fridays was the 2015 US Open Speedway Champion Casey Donholt from New York. Donholt is making his way across the country racing at tracks along the way and will be riding at tracks in Southern and here in Northern California. Donholt struggled a little on our tricky dirt oval Friday night not making a transfer in the handicap or scratch programs.
Matt King is having a good run in Division II. King repeated his main event win last week with an encore Friday night. King beat Shawn Eldredge who finished second and Eddie Marsalla who was third to the finish line. King also raced in the Run What U Brung program winning the RWUB heat race but finishing second to Jonathan Curry who won the RWUB main event. On top in Division III was Jeremy Estes, who also won the DIII main event in week one at Fast Fridays. Estes won his heat race to transfer and stayed ahead of Eddie Luke and Casey Cornilsen who were second and third. PJ Byrne won the trophy dash, Shawn Eldredge was second, and Jamison Dilkey was third.
Auburn’s Cameron Krezman won the Youth A 250cc main event. A strong competitor in this program, Krezman picked up his second 250cc A main event win at Fast Fridays. Krezman was third in his heat race to transfer to the main event. “I was a little more competitive and took it harder in the corners for the main,” Krezman said. Gregory Moore again stood on the winner’s podium for the second week in a row for taking the checkered flag in the Youth 250cc B main event. Moore has worked hard and has really improved his skill set on the track. The Youth 150cc programs were combined and Enzo Sorani won the main event, his first in the 2016 season.
