Six-time AMA National Champion Billy “The Kid” Janniro won all six of his races including the main event to claim the 2016 Big Kids Gumball Rally.
Janniro entered the main event with a perfect score, had first choice of starting position, and he took gate one. Aaron Fox then chose gate two, Tommy Hedden selected gate four, which left “Mad” Max Ruml with gate three.
Janniro exploded off the starting line when the tapes went up and led the field into turn one. Fox immediately chased after the leader on the back straight to set up a battle of national champions. Fox remained on Janniro’s rear fender and hoped for a mistake. Janniro rarely makes mistakes, though, and this race would follow that pattern as he held off the persistent challenge and crossed the finish line first. Fox had to settle for second, Max Ruml was third, and Hedden finished fourth.
The Big Kids Gumball Rally is held the night before the prestigious Gumball Rally, which is an event for American youth speedway racers. Despite serving as the “undercard” of the weekend, the Big Kids Gumball Rally attracts most of the top American speedway racers. This year the field included British Speedway racers Adam Roynon and James Sergeant. A special format was used for the expanded field. Three rounds of heats, then four quarterfinals, two semifinals, and the Final.
Under 21 National Champion “Mad” Max Ruml kicked off the evening with a win over Tyson Talkington. Janniro used the outside to pass fast-starting Gage Geist to win event two. Dillon Ruml made a brilliant cutback move to pass former National Champion “Flyin” Mike Faria and won event three. Kurtis Hamill defeated Bob Hicks in event four. Hedden beat Roynon in event five. Fox finished the first round by defeating former Under 21 National Champion Bryce Starks.
Janniro opened the second round with a win over Starks. Max Ruml won his second straight race ahead of Tyler Warren. Former Under 21 National Champion Austin Novratil beat Dillon Ruml in the next event. Luke Becker held off Geist for his first win. Hedden made it two for two by beating Hamill. Fox beat Hicks to end round two.
Becker started the final round by earning his second straight win. Roynon showed that he could adapt to the small tracks by beating Max Ruml. Janniro remained perfect with a win over Hicks. Warren scored a win over Dillon Ruml. Hedden matched Janniro’s perfect score by defeating Neil Facchini. Geist completed the heats with an impressive victory over Fox.
Fox won the first quarterfinal with Novratil earning second. The Ruml Brothers scored a one-two finish in the second quarterfinal with Max leading Dillon home. Hedden remained perfect with Hicks getting second place in the next quarterfinal. Janniro led Becker into the semifinal round with his fourth consecutive win.
Fox and Max Ruml were first and second in their semi and moved on to the Final. Janniro defeated Hedden in the second semifinal to enter the Final with a perfect score.
Harold Hartke made a great start from gate four and led the Second Division Main Event field through lap one. Northern California’s Eddie Marsalla got himself in to second and stalked the leader until they took the white flag. Hartke made a mistake and went wide exited turn two the final time and Marsalla pounced. He roared underneath Hartke and took the lead. Marsalla held on through the final turn and claimed victory. A disappointed Hartke finished second, Mitch Pierson was third and Nick Dion was fourth.
Chet Kohler made his speedway debut a memorable one as he took home the victory in Third Division Main Event. Tom Bryant crossed the line second, Greg Willis finished third, and George Yates was fourth.
