Legends and Heroes Night - Industry Racing, CA, USA - August 2, 2017
Dillon “Pickle” Ruml won all five of his races and claimed victory on Haddick’s Towing Classic Car Show/Legends and Heroes Night at Industry Racing.
Dillon Ruml wisely chose gate one with the first pick of starting position for the Scratch Main Event. He was first off the starting line when the tapes went up and took control of the race on the first lap. Aaron Fox, Broc Nicol, and Shawn “Mad Dog” McConnell trailed behind the leader. Dillon Ruml still led after two laps and wasn’t fazed by his competitors snapping at his heels. Dillon Ruml kept everyone behind him the final two laps and was first to the checkered flag. Fox finished second, Nicol was third, and McConnell finished fourth.
The evening began with a thud as Max Ruml crashed heavily in turn one and was ruled out for the evening with a concussion. Nicol won the restart after using the outside to pass Shaun Harmatiuk. Fox beat Gage Geist in the second heat. Jimmy “Little Animal” Fishback was victorious in event three. Dillon Ruml beat McConnell to finish round one.
Round two opened with Manzares out-dueling Tyson Burmeister for the win. Fox made it two for two by beating Nicol. Geist defeated Fishback in event 15. Dillon Ruml scored his second straight win to complete the second round.
The third round started with Burmeister defeating Tim Gomez. Nicol defeated Manzares in the next heat. McConnell defeated Bobby “Boogaloo” Schwartz in event 27. Dillon Ruml ended the heats with a victory over Fox.
Dillon Ruml roared to his fourth consecutive victory in the first semi while McConnell used a savvy veteran cutback move in turn two to earn the second transfer to the main. Nicol won the second semi with Fox following him into the main.
Manzares was victorious in the Scratch Consolation. Fishback was second, Gomez finished third, and Burmeister was credited with fourth after an engine failure.
Rudy Laurer led from start to finish and was victorious in the Second Division Main Event. Chet Kohler finished second, Michael Wells was third, and Bruce Marteney finished fourth.
Kevin “Rip” Fife won his heat, his semi, and completed his perfect evening with a win in the Third Division Main Event. George Yates was second, Kevin Fiore finished third, and Steve “Beach Ball” Brown was fourth.
“Gentleman” Jake Isaac defeated Sara Cords to win the Junior 250 Main Event.
Slater Lightcap overcame a 60-yard handicap and took home the victory in the Mini 150 First Division Main Event. Travis Horn finished second.
Gordon Teuber kept all of his competitors at bay for five laps to win the Mini 150 Second Division Main Event. Andrew Russell was second, Owen Williams finished third, Levi Leutz was fourth, and Jose “Nitro” Navarrete finished fifth.
Ken Matsudaira took home top honors in the Pee Wee Main Event. Dakota Black was second, Connor Salazar finished third, Gavin Geist was fourth, Strydrr Uebersetzing finished fifth, and Penny Hall was sixth.
Jeff Rowe and Josh Bennett jumped to the front at the start of the Sidecar Main Event. They looked primed for an upset victory but those hopes lasted less than a lap. Bryan “Quickie” Motis and Johnny Bach charged underneath them to take the lead as they exited turn four. They quickly put real estate between themselves and their followers. National Champions Joe Jones and Tom Summers slipped by Rowe and Bennett but they would not catch the leaders. Motis and Bach crossed the finish line first, Jones and Summers settled for second, Dillon Osborne and Ashley Gibbons finished third, and a disappointed Rowe and Bennett ended up in fourth.
Legends and Heroes Night had many speedway racers from the past, and a few who are still racing, greeting fans and signing autographs as they entered the venue. To further enhance the nostalgic spirit of the event, there was also classic cars on display.
