ACES REGAIN THE LEAGUE TITLE AND LUKE BECKER CONTINUES TO DOMINATE PERRIS – TEAM FINALS, SATURDAY 18 MARCH, PERRIS, CA
The Santa Maria Aces regained the American Winter League team championship after another dominating show at Perris Raceway. Meantime, Luke Becker scored a five ride maximum to top score again for the evening, though his unbeaten run on the night was seriously under threat by Gage Geist who out trapped him in heat 1, looking secure out front until his bike failed on lap two. Full report to follow;
Eagles 41 – Heathens 51
The Heathens once more were so near yet so far, getting the runners up place in the league for the third year in a row. They had to win by a huge margin to overturn the Aces, and though their win against the Eagles was more comfortable than the score line suggested, it was just a step too much to catch the Aces. Aside from Becker's maximum and Main win, solid back up came from Rohn Zellner on 10 and Shaun Harmatiuk on 9. After 6 races and 6 straight 4-2 advantages, the Eagles, 12 down, scored an 8-1 in Heat 7 thanks to Dillon Ruml (joker) and Gage Geist placing first and second to narrow scores to 25-20 to the Heathens. A second Joker ride win in heat 12 from an inspired Rick Valdez, who scored 13+1 on the night for the Eagles kept the score line honest. Valdez was supported well by Geist and Ruml who both ended on 9+1. The Heathens were hampered late on when Rick Richards suffered a badly cut finger in a heat 10 crash and missed vital rides.
Aces 57 – Vikings 40
After a tense and close early few heats between the two likely title winners, the Aces went on cruise control to capture their second championship in three years. The difference between the two teams was measured in depth, the Aces astonishingly only recording three last places in 17 heats. Austin Novratil returned to the series and reeled off 4 wins to top score on 12 for the champion Aces. Max Ruml supported with 10+1 with super reserves Brad Moreau and Kenny Hansen scoring 7+1 and 8+1 respectively, and Doug Nicol getting two late wins to score 7. Aaron Fox and Kurtis Hamill scored 10 each for the Vikings. Fox's heat 1 win over Ruml and Nicol's last ride with Hamill both being memorable. The Vikings led after heat 1 and the scores were tied after three. Heats 4 through 8 saw the Aces get another 22 points to the Vikings 8 and from that point it was hard to see a way back for the Vikings. Ruml, Hayley Perrault (who once more rode superbly) and Moreau all were second time winners as part of the Aces 2015 winning septet.
Other Divisions
Sebastian Palmese once more dominated the 250 class, winning all three heats and the Main, though Jake Isaac was well on his fast pace. 150 action saw a clean sweep for Glenn Geist from the 30 yard line, with Levi Leutz equally doing the same in all three Pee Wee events. Conner Hickerson swept the Mini Bike Class and the Jeff Rowe / Josh Bennett team did likewise in Sidecars. The Support Class had three excellent races with three winners. Brent Smith took heat 1 and Fred Armenta heat 2. Armenta was ahead in the Main until a mechanical failure, which left the door open for Dennis Osmer to claim victory.
The Perris 2016/17 season wraps up on 22 April with it's biggest race. 16 riders will enter the AMA National Championship Series Qualifier in hope to land one of the last 6 coveted spots in the series. The winner will also be awarded the Nick Varner Trophy. Other divisions will race for the 2017 Track Championships.
