Austin “All Throttle” Novratil opened Costa Mesa Speedway’s 50th season by winning the Jack Milne Cup for the second time.

Defending National Champion Broc Nicol lined up in gate one for the Final with Novratil in gate two, Tyson Burmeister in gate three, and two-time National Champion Aaron Fox in the outside gate. Novratil shot to the lead when the tapes went up and had Burmeister right behind him. Burmeister tried to pressure the leader but also had to defend second from the hard-charging Nicol. Novratil led through lap two while Nicol used the outside to take over second. He immediately set his sights on Novratil but was unable to find a way by. Novratil was first to the checkered flag, Nicol was second, Burmeister finished third, and Fox was fourth.

The Golden Season of Costa Mesa Speedway welcomed a strong crowd through the gates. It also welcomed back multi-time National Champion Billy “The Kid” Janniro after nearly five seasons. The fans were pleasantly surprised to see his return.

The format for the Jack Milne Cup was three rounds of heats but was more cutthroat than the typical event as it did not include semi-finals. Therefore, the heats were more crucial as they provided a direct path to the Final.

Burmeister kicked off the heats with a win while Jason Ramirez held off Janniro for second. Fox and Dillon Ruml battled in event two before the latter fell leaving Fox with an easy win. Nicol’s first race as reigning National Champion ended with a victory over Michael Wells. Novratil ended the first round by defeating the ageless Bobby “Boogaloo” Schwartz.

Janniro beat Shawn “Mad Dog” McConnell to start the second round. Burmeister defeated Fox for his second straight victory. Ruml led event 12 before Nicol used the outside to get around him. Ruml’s fight to retake the lead ended when he slid off. Nicol went on to his second win in a row. Novratil kept pace with Burmeister and Nicol by earning his second win ahead of Schwartz to finish round two.

Janniro opened round three with a victory over Jason Ramirez but the tough format meant his seven points would only put him in the Scratch Consolation. Fox beat McConnell to get himself into the Final. Nicol remained perfect by handing Burmeister his first defeat but both competitors made the Final. Dillon Ruml ended the heats with a victory over Novratil whose eight points would put him in the Final.

Janniro romped to victory in the Scratch Consolation with McConnell finishing second, Jason Ramirez getting third, and Schwartz coming in fourth.

Chet Kohler, easily the tallest racer in Southern California, put together four smooth laps and won the Second Division Main Event. Northern California’s Lawrence McNutt finished second, Rohn Zellner was third, and Archie Perez finished fourth.

Mike Miller, who made a comeback last year after several decades away from speedway, was the victor in the Third Division Main Event. Chris Wolfs was second, Dan Wensloff finished third, and Blake Cronkrite was credited with fourth.

“Gentleman” Jake Isaac was victorious in the Junior 250 Main Event. Slater Lightcap finished second, Luke Whitcomb was third, and Andrew Russell was credited with fourth.

Owen Williams won the Mini 150 Main Event by inches over the fast-closing Travis Horn. Justin Almon finished third and Levi Leutz was fourth.

Dillon Osborne and Ashley Gibbons led from start to finish and took home the Sidecar Main Event victory. Defending National Champions Joe Jones and Tom Summers were second, Jeff Rowe and Josh Bennett finished third, and Bryan Motis and Johnny Bach were fourth.
