Billy “The Kid” Janniro had his second consecutive perfect night and won the Scratch Main Event again at the world famous Costa Mesa Speedway.

Janniro and Austin “All Throttle” Novratil both entered the main event with perfect scores but Novratil won the draw for first choice and picked gate one. Janniro selected gate four, the same gate he won from the previous week. Former National Champion Aaron Fox chose gate two which left Dillon Ruml with gate three.

Janniro exploded from the starting line when the tapes went up and led into turn one. The native of Northern California quickly established a comfortable margin. Behind him, Novratil and Ruml were waging a titanic battle for second with Fox close behind them. The two combatants raced inches apart inside and outside every lap. Ruml was able to secure second but wouldn’t catch Janniro. The multi-time National Champion cruised to the victory, Ruml took the hard-earned second, Novratil finished third, and Fox was fourth.

The first event took three attempts to complete. The third attempt saw former National Champion Chris Manchester get his first heat victory of the season after passing Charlie “The Edge” Venegas. Novratil beat “Fast” Eddie Castro in the next heat. Janniro defeated Ruml for his first win. Fox finished round one by holding off Shawn “Mad Dog” McConnell for the win.

Manchester started round two by beating McConnell for his second straight victory. Novratil beat Venegas for his second win in a row. Janniro kept pace with Manchester and Novratil with a win over Bobby “Boogaloo” Schwartz. Fox beat Ruml to end the second round as one of four riders with perfect scores.

Ruml ended Manchester’s undefeated run with a victory over him to open the final round of heats. Novratil defeated McConnell for his third win in a row. Janniro scored his third straight win by beating Venegas. Fox ended the heats with a defeat of Schwartz to match the perfect scores of Novratil and Janniro.

Janniro and Fox finished one-two in the first semi to transfer to the main event. Novratil won the second semi while Ruml finished second to also transfer to the main.

Schwartz made the best start in the Scratch Consolation but Manchester roared around the outside of him to take the lead. Manchester never looked back from there and took the victory. McConnell was second, Schwartz finished third, and Venegas was credited with fourth.

Chet Kohler made the best start and led all the way to the checkered flag to win the Second Division Main Event. Hayley Perrault was second, Joe Donaldson finished third, and Rudy Laurer was fourth.

The first start of the Junior 250 Main Event ended in a heap in turn two. No riders were hurt but Slater Lightcap’s bike was too mangled for him to restart. Landon Collins put together four perfect laps and kept Cameron Krezman at bay for the victory. Andrew Russell finished third and “Lightning” Luke Whitcomb was fourth.

Jose Navarrete defeated Levi Leutz to claim the Mini 150 Main Event.

Jeff Rowe and Josh Bennett were leading the Sidecar Main Event but a pileup behind them caused the race to be stopped. National Champions Joe Jones and Tom Summers were banished to the penalty line for the restart. The second time the tapes went up Dillon Osborne and Ashley Gibbons took the lead. Stuart Glass and Jack Straw chased after the leaders and hoped for a mistake. That mistake would never come as Osborne and Gibbons led all the way to the finish. Glass and Straw held on to second, Rowe and Bennett finished third, and Jones and Summers were fourth.

Costa Mesa Speedway will be dark until Saturday, July 14 when they host the annual Orange County Fair Derby. There will certainly be a large crowd because the event is held in conjunction with the Orange County Fair.
