AMA Speedway National Championship Round 4 - Industry Racing, CA, USA - August 11

Eight-time AMA National Speedway Champion took a giant step closer to a record-breaking ninth title with a stunning victory at round four of the AMA Speedway National Championship Series at Industry Racing.

Austin Novratil entered the Final undefeated and that afforded him the first opportunity to pick his starting position. He took gate one. Janniro, who entered the Final having only lost to Novratil, picked gate four. Aaron Fox selected gate two which left Jimmy “Little Animal” Fishback with gate three.

Novratil led from the tapes while the others battled through turns one and two. The former Under 21 National Champion quickly staked himself a comfortable lead while Janniro emerged the field as the main challenger. Novratil maintained his lead through two laps when Janniro switched strategy. The wily veteran put his front wheel over the inside pipe and dramatically cut into the lead and was breathing down the leader’s neck as they took the white flag. Novratil still held the lead as they entered turn three the final time. Janniro went to the well again and straddled the inside pipe. It created a gap underneath Novratil and he shot through it. The two clashed exiting turn four and Janniro came out the better from the contact and was first to the checkered flag. Novratil spun around from the battle and crossed the line backward before falling off. Fishback was third and narrowly missed the prone Novratil while Fox finished fourth.

Everyone in attendance was shocked and many stating “What did I just see?” The result gave Janniro a comfortable 11 point Series lead entering the final round at Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway on September 29. Novratil, although very disappointed with getting second, found solace in the fact that he was now just two points behind Luke Becker for second overall in the series.

The evening got off to a rocky start when a crash in turn one brought out the red flag in the very first race. Novratil won the restart with Bart Bast getting second. Dillon Ruml, the dominant racer at Industry this season, won event two ahead of his former mechanic, Tim Gomez. Janniro defeated Fishback in event three. Luke Becker, home from Europe for the Series, finished the first round with a victory over Max Ruml.

Novratil opened the second round with a win over Dillon Ruml. Janniro defeated Tommy Hedden for his second consecutive win. Becker made it two in a row by beating Fishback. Max Ruml used the outside to take the lead and the win to close round two.

Novratil made it three wins in as many races to start round three. Dillon Ruml defeated Becker for his second win. Charlie “The Edge” Venegas beat Gomez for his first win. Janniro charged under Fox and claimed his third win in a row to finish the third round.

The fourth round began just as the previous three had, with a Novratil victory. Fishback defeated Bast in the next heat.

Event 15 was a big showdown with Janniro, Venegas, and the Ruml Brothers coming to the tapes. Venegas gated everyone and led for two laps. Janniro closed ground and stormed underneath Venegas and took the lead as they entered turn three the third time. He never looked back and kept his perfect score. Fox beat Becker to complete round four.

Entering the final round Janniro and Novratil both had perfect 12-point scores; Dillon Ruml and Becker each had 10 points; Max Ruml and Fishback had eight points apiece; Fox tallied seven; and Tim Gomez had five.

The final round began with the two undefeated competitors, Janniro and Novratil, joined at the tapes by Becker and Gomez. Becker, however, had problems with his primary machine at the pit gate and frantically had to fetch his spare bike and he hastily staged having just avoided a two-minute exclusion. The last-second scramble clearly impacted him as he was last from the tapes. Janniro led for the first half-lap but Novratil was on a mission. He stormed under Janniro as they entered turn three, something rarely seen, and took control. The result wasn’t in doubt after that as he romped to victory. Gomez was third and an extremely disappointed Becker finished fourth.

Max Ruml beat Bast in the next heat to get himself into the semis. Venegas defeated Russell Green in the penultimate heat to squeeze into the semis. Fox defeated Dillon Ruml in the final heat.

Novratil blitzed the field in the first semi for his sixth win and a trip to the Final. Fishback rode a savvy four laps to take second and join Novratil. Janniro was victorious in the second semi with Fox’s second place earning him a place in the Final.
