Burmeister Wins AMA Race Off In Perris Blockbuster

Tyson Burmeister put the icing on the cake of a remarkable comeback with victory at the AMA National Championship Race Off at Perris Raceway, CA on 21 April 2018. The qualifier is now in its third year of staging and once more it was a tense affair as 16 contenders gave it their all to land one of just 6 remaining coveted places in the 2018 AMA National Championship Series. The qualifier was part two of a double feature, with a 20 heat program for Track Championships in other divisions taking place two hours earlier.

The qualifier utilized the traditional 16 man 20 heat championship program, with an added main event at the end of the night for the top 4.

Burmeister top scored with 14 from the heats, his only defeat coming from the hugely impressive fellow returnee Tim Gomez, who mustered 12 points and three wins on the night for 5th overall. Jimmy Fishback won four in a row before getting a third place in a top heavy fifth ride behind Burmeister and the ever thrilling Tommy Hedden. Fishback, Hedden and 20 time NorCal champ Bart Bast all ended up on 13 from the heats, which put them all into the big final.

The 6th and final qualifying spot proved to be something that the best Hollywood screenwriter may struggle to script. Brothers Jason and Samuel Ramirez both ended up with 9 points and had to race each other for the last championship position. For Jason it was just his second race after missing the past two seasons recovering from racing injuries. Jason had two wins in the heats whilst Samuel, with an all action, edge of your seat outside style, had four second places and a third. The older Ramirez Jason got the drop in the run off with Samuel trying his usual outside line before sliding off in turn 1 of lap three which handed the last spot to his older brother.

Other notable performances came from Blake Borello, who missed the run off by one point. Having taken two rides to settle in on his first visit to Perris, his potential was there to see including an impressive heat 9 win. 16 year old Chance Grove, just a few months into his speedway career scored 7 and it was clear he is just a hair away from the series standard. Surprise of the evening was William McCloskey who steadily went about business, picked up points and showed the liking for the track that had been seen all winter with 7.

The final saw Burmeister get a fabulous start to lead Fishback. Once Hedden settled into third ahead of Bast he mounted a challenge on Fishback but was never quite close enough to get by. Burmeister roared home to a popular victory in front of another big Saturday night crowd.

Other Divisions:
Sidecars made a welcome return, with Dillon Osborne and Ashley Gibbons taking both heats. However, it was normal service in the final when multi time National Champion Joe Jones and Tom Summers secured Victory. Joey Robinson was the victor in the popular Hooligan Division.

Michael Wells won both of his Division Two heats and the Main to sweep the Division Two Track Championship. Mike Lane and Chet Kohler won the other heats with Ron Davis winning the LCQ. Blake Cronkrite went 3 for 3 in Division 3, Slater Lightcap repeating that feat in 250 Junior. Continuing the theme of domination were Owen Williams and Kensei Matsudaira, who won all heats & Mains in the 150 Mini and PW divisions respectively. Matsudaira and Ryder Schultz were involved in a terrific pee wee main event battle with Matsudaira making a last lap outside pass for the win.

The event concluded the long standing Perris Winter season. However, the success of the whole series has led to three summer dates being added beginning with a special team race on 30th June. The AMA National Best Pairs is on August 4th with a traditional US Handicap and Scratch race program on September 15. November 3 or 17 is penciled in for a to be confirmed International Team USA event whilst December 8th will see a huge individual event, the details of which will be announced is due course.
