Double Ruml Rumble As Brother's Take AMA Speedway National Best Pairs Title! Perris Raceway, CA, August 4, 2018. Max Ruml returned to the USA in style as he and brother Dillon won the AMA National Best Pairs Championship at Perris Raceway on August 4th. As well as AMA #1 Plates, the Ruml brothers also received the Inaugural 'Bobby Schwartz Trophy', in honor of the 1981/82 World Pairs Champion. Schwartz was in attendance and received raptures of applause from the crowd in his pre race interview. The Pairs featured 6 teams, each team racing the others one time each in 5 rounds of qualifying, scoring 3,2,1,0. The top two teams on points then went to a sudden death final for the title, the big race scoring 4,3,2,0 to eliminate ties. Heat 1 saw the Ruml's get their first 5-1 on the night over Tim Gomez and Gage Geist, Max and Dillon giving a great display in team riding. The other team of brothers, the Ramirez scored a 5-1 in heat 2 over NorCals William McCloskey and Jeremy Estes. The first staging of this heat had three riders down in turn one and a ten minute delay to repair the crashwall. All got up and raced on! Heat three had returnee Chris Kerr take a stunning win over Russell Green, with Kerr's team mate Blake Borello impressing in keeping Aaron Fox at the back. Heat 4 showed that the Ruml's were not nailed on winners, Jason Ramirez getting a quick starts and keeping them at bay in a tied 3-3 heat, putting both teams on 8. Kerr and Borello then went into the points lead, hitting McCloskey and Estes with a 5-1. Heat 6 was shared, Fox getting the win over Geist and Gomez. The Ruml's got back to 5-1 ways in heat 7, Max leading home Dillon with Kerr in third. Green lead home Fox over McCloskey to 5-1 heat 8. Tim Gomez had a fabulous win over the Ramirez brothers to 3-3 heat 9. Scores after 3 rounds were Ruml's 13, Ramirez's 11, Kerr/ Borello 10, Fox / Green 10, Gomez / Geist 7 and Estes / McCloskey 3. Max and Dillon Ruml hit Fox and Green for 5-1 in heat 10. Gomez won again in heat 11, Geist following him home for the maximum with Estes third. Kerr won heat 12 for his third win on the night, the Ramirez brothers keeping Borello at the back for a tied 3-3 heat. Going into the last round the teams in 2nd-5th were separated by just three points, all still in final contention. After the expected fourth Ruml in heat 13, the four contending teams for second place were in action. Kerr won heat 14 over Gomez, Borello made a crucial pass on Geist and chased Gomez to the flag. The 4-2 to Kerr and Borello put pressure on the Ramirez brothers, who needed a 3-3 or better in heat 15 to make the final. However, Fox got out in front and Green moved by Jason Ramirez for third. The 4-2 meant that it would, by a solitary point, be Kerr and Borello who made the final. It was a true nail-biter with 2nd-5th teams separated by just three points Kerr got the gate in the final and whilst Borello was at the back, Kerr controlled the pace of the race brilliantly to keep his outstanding protégés and team mate on the heals of the Ruml's. The riders were close throughout, worthy of TV pundit's Kelvin Tatum's cliché of 'you could throw a blanket over all four riders.' On the final lap Dillon Ruml got a burst of speed coming out of turn 2. This pushed Kerr wide and so Max could join his brother for a last gasp 7-2 maximum and a deserved National title. The Support Class also ran a Pairs program. Six teams entered and ran two heats, points scored put them in the A,B or C final. It was Michael Wells and Kiwi visitor Darrin Wilson who came out on top, defeating David Rust and Mike Miller 7-2 in the final. Division Three ran a scratch program. Tom Bryant won heat 1 but fell in heat 2, bike damage ending his night. James Rust on his upright stepped up to win heat 2 and the Main. It was another well attended Perris event. Next up at Perris is Old Skool Speedway, Handicap and Scratch racing on September 15th. The event will also feature the popular 'Last of Mohicans' Last Man Out Challenge.
