Lynchburg Speedway
March 1, 2019

Here in Tennessee we have not had the excitement of speedway racing for a long time. The late 1970's marked the last time for a Speedway in Tennessee. Last Friday, March 1st, we had the pleasure of hosting a speedway event. Although the event was not a traditional 16 man D1 format, it was very special for us. We hosted some great racers. Furthermore we had the pleasure of past World champion Billy Hamill conduct a school prior to the event. In addition, Kelly Inman from Industry Racing jumped on a plane and made his way East to Tennessee.

The rider list was very impressive for a first time event. Riders such as Max Ruml, Casey Donholt, and Redmond Bohannon were on hand. Max brought along Lewis Hughes to spin wrenches.

The school kicked off the day with lessons and encouragement from Max, Lewis, Kelly and Billy. 4 adults and 6 kids joined in a 3 hour session. Only one adult rider had been on a speedway bike prior to the day. All others were first time riders. The kids were the highlight of the event. After the school, we had match races set for the six students in the race program.

Kelly Inman was tasked for the program layout. Because we had a mixture of Division 1 and Division 2 skilled riders, Kelly laid out an 18 race format consisting of Scratch races, Division 2 races and a few Handicap events. The racing was excellent throughout the evening. The spectators on a cold Friday night were extremely few. However, those that came expressed how wonderful it was and thanked us for bringing speedway to Tennessee. All-in-all the event set the stage for more Speedway racing in Tennessee. As a result, the goal was achieved. As of today more speedway bikes have been purchased by adults and some youth bikes were purchased too. The level of excitement is great and we hope to continue a steady growth in the Midwest area.

Lynchburg Flat Track Racing would like to thank all the racers from Colorado, California, New York, Ohio, Illinois and Florida for coming to support Tennessee Speedway. Our next big event will be September 28th on the outdoor track in Shelbyville, Tennessee.

We would also like to thank all the people in the speedway family from racers, to suppliers and media personnel fro encouraging and supporting our race.

I made the trip South to Shelbyville, TN for the Speedway Bikes. I heard about last year but didn't seem to be many going so I didn't go. Well this year they had a good show from Colorado, New York, Illinois and Ohio. Billy Hamill came out with Max Ruml for the Jr. Speedway Academy and Max participated Friday night. They had heat races and mains but this was more of an exhibition hoping to get on the outdoor track possibly in September. The track was bit rough but they put on a good show. Saturday was Flat Track Racing but they had access to the Mega Outdoor Facility (Maverick Arena) where they hold the Tennessee Walker Horse events that seats 30,000. So a few of the New York riders, Johnny Lewis, and the Colorado Kid Redmond Bohannon spun some laps keeping a keen eye on the cement wall. The track surface was super smooth and looked like Limestone/pea gravel mixture and was nice and moist. Kurt.
