2019 AMA/FIM Youth Silver Cup - Industry Racing, CA, USA - August 11, 2019
Cameron Krezman and Nick Hohlbein both traveled down from Northern California and made the round trip worth it as they took home the Youth Silver Cup in their respective divisions from Industry Racing.
Krezman had first choice of starting position in the Junior 250 Final and chose gate one. Slater Lightcap was next and picked gate two. Landon Norton then selected gate four which left gate three to Timmy Dion.
Krezman made the best start and led the quartet into turn one. He continued to hold the lead through the first lap while his competitors continued to chase him. Dion was leading the charge but they could not get to the leader. Krezman, who was crowned National Champion last month, didn’t turn a wheel wrong and led to the finish. Dion finished second, Norton was third, and Lightcap finished fourth.
The Mini 150 Final took three attempts to complete. The first attempt ended with Hohlbein on the ground. A complete restart was ordered and the second try concluded with National Champion Levi Leutz and Mike McGrath tangling and going down. The third time the tapes went up it was Hohlbein who jumped into the lead. Leutz, who was previously undefeated, took up the challenge behind the leader. Hohlbein was unfazed by the charge behind him and was first to the checkered flag. Leutz had to settle for second, McGrath finished third, and Owen Williams was fourth.
The Junior 250 heats kicked off with Dion earning a victory over “Lightning” Luke Whitcomb. Krezman beat Greg Moore for his first win. Lightcap opened his account with a victory over Alex Martin. Norton came from behind to win the final heat of round one.
Krezman started round two by defeating Martin for his second win in a row. Norton made it two for two by beating Dion. Lightcap battled Kyle Cunningham before surging ahead and taking his second straight win. Landon Collins passed New York’s Johnny Oakden to win the last race of the second round.
The third round began with Lightcap taking his third consecutive win at the expense of Collins. Dion handed Krezman his only defeat of the day in event 16. Norton passed Martin as they took the white flag and held him back to take his third win on the trot. Dylan Wagner beat Charlie Trana to finish round three.
Round four started with Norton taking his fourth straight win by defeating Whitcomb. Lightcap kept pace with Norton by holding off Dion for his fourth win in four races. Krezman beat Collins in event 24. Martin scored a victory ahead of Moore to complete the fourth round.
The score chart was tight at the top after four rounds with Norton and Lightcap tied with a perfect 12 points; Krezman was one point back with 11; Dion had 10 points; and Martin and Collins each had nine. The six aforementioned competitors were crowded together in the final round in just two different heats.
Wilbur Hancock opened the final round with a win over Jonny Oakden. Dion put himself into the Final by winning the next heat while Martin and Collins were mathematically eliminated from the Final by finishing second and third, respectively. Wagner defeated Moore in the penultimate heat. The last heat had three racers guaranteed to make the Final but the outcome would determine first gate choice. Krezman, Norton, and Lightcap all came to the tapes within one point of each other and holding hopes of winning that first choice. Krezman led from start to finish to earn first gate choice with Lightcap getting second and Norton finishing third.
Krezman’s victory capped a remarkable run in the National Championship and the Silver Cup. Two of American Youth Speedway’s “Triple Crown” events, the third being the Gumball Rally. He followed up his perfect performance at the Nationals by being defeated only once in six races at the Silver Cup. An incredible 10 victories in 11 races against the toughest competition.
The Mini 150 heats commenced with Colton Nelson beating Jose Navarrete. Hohlbein defeated McGrath in event two. Leutz beat Williams to end the first round.
The second round started with Leutz defeating Nelson for his second win. Hohlbein scored his second victory by defeating Williams. Brandy Landon held off Max Anderson to finish round two.
Round three began with McGrath passing Landon for his first victory. Williams handed Hohlbein his only loss of the day in the next heat. Leutz beat Nick Dunn for his third straight win.
The final round of Mini 150 heats opened with Hohlbein defeating Nelson to get himself into the Final. McGrath won the penultimate heat to earn a place in the Final and Williams’s second meant he would also be in the Final. Leutz closed out the heats with a victory to remain perfect entering the Final.
The Silver Cup is the one of the three “Triple Crown” events of American Youth Speedway. It has been held at Industry Racing every year since its inception. Many people contribute money and product to the event and to help out the racers who are the future of American Speedway.
