ACES STORM TO THIRD TITLE IN PERRIS TEAM FINALE!

The 2019 US Team League at Perris Raceway concluded in dramatic fashion on April 27th as the Santa Maria Aces took their third title in the league’s fifth season. They completed the campaign with three wins, clear of all of their opponents who each ended the season with one win and two losses. Both League 1 matches went down to the last heat with final race last lap position changes deciding the ties.

Santa Maria Aces 37 – Russell Green 13 (6), Dave Rust 8 (3), Joey Donaldson 6+1 (4), Hayley Perrault 5+1 (5), Charles Pearson 3+1 (3), James Rust 2 (3). R/R for Austin Novratil.

Huntington Beach Heathens 34 – Max Ruml 13 (5), Rohn Zellner 8 (4), Rick Richards 4+1 (5), Lawrence McNutt 3+1 (4), John Wilder 3 (3), Brent Smith 2 (2), Robbie Sauer 1 (4).

The Heathens needed a 14 point win over the Aces to take the title and ahead of the event it looked real after the Aces suffered from a late withdrawal from #1 Austin Novratil. The early confidence in the Heathens camp was soon dampened out as the Aces stormed ahead 14-6 after 4 races. Max Ruml and Rick Richards hit back with a heat 5 5-1 and steady progress brought the Heathens ahead by one after heat 12. That said, it was already mathematically impossible for the Aces to be toppled in the title battle. A final heat victory for Russell Green saw Peter Davenports team roar home for their third title, adding to 2015 and 2017 victories.

Perris Eagles 40: Dillon Ruml 11 (5), Eddie Castro 9 (5), Will Will McCloskey 7 (4), Rudy Laurer 7 (3), Jim Gibson 4 (3), David Lynch 2 (3), Steve Brown 0 (3)

Ventura Vikings 41: Mike Miller 11+1 (5), Sebastian Palmese 10 (5), Kevin Fiore 7+3 (4), Michael Wells 6+1 (5), Brad Moreau 4+1 (3), Brad Sauer 3 (4). R/R for Sammy Tetrault.

The Ventura Vikings produced a huge upset with what looked like a seriously under strength team, to overall the Perris Eagles by one point in a close encounter. The lead changed 8 times between both teams over the 16 heats, the biggest points gap all night being just three points. Sebastian Palmese showed maturity beyond his 15 years with a string of five second places. But the Vikings key men were Mike Miller and Kevin Fiore, racing in the second division rider portion of the program. Dillon Ruml was outstanding for the Eagles with 11, which would have been a bigger haul except for a nasty tumble in the final race which he quickly walked away from. Eddie Castro, Will McCloskey and Rudy Laurer all serving up fine support, but the Eagles were a point short in an epic battle.

Final League 1 standings;
1. Aces (3 wins), + 34 race points
2. Heathens (1 win, 2 losses) +1 race point
3. Eagles (1 win, 2 losses) -20 race points
3. Vikings (1 win, 2 losses) -20 race points

League 2 (Divisions 2, 3, 250 Junior, 150 Mini)

Heathens 33: Lawrence McNutt 18, Dennis Osmer 3, 250: Kyle Cunningham 9, 150: Levi Leutz 3.

Eagles 33: Steve Brown 15, David Newsham 11, George Yates 0, 250: Aidan McNutt 1, 150: Jose Navarrete 6.

Vikings 23: Don Nemarnik 8, 250: Slater Lightcap 6, 150: Nick Hohlbein 9.

Aces 9: Tyler Moszer 8, Anthony Bennett 1.

The Eagles tied on the night with the Heathens but won the inaugural League 2 crown. Each of the three divisions had maximum unbeaten men: Lawrence McNutt won all support races, Kyle Cunningham swept the 250 races with Nick Hohlbein impressing on his 150 track debut, taking all races.

League 2 Final Table:
1. Eagles 21 points
2. Heathens 16 points
3. Vikings 12 points
4. Aces 9 points

Other Divisions:

Pee Wees: Ryder Schultz once more won all Pee Wee races but had a tough battle to hold off Reed Sanchez in the Main. Hudson Jones, son of Multi time Sidecar National Champ Joe Jones made his speedway debut.

Main Result: Ryder Schultz, Reed Sanchez, Billy Cano, Hudson Jones.

Sidecars: Top Sidecar teams Joe Jones/Josh Flammia and Dillon Osborne/Ashley Summers competed in 3 match races. Jones/Flammia took both heats whilst Osborne/Gibbons took the final.

The event concluded the extended winter team series, which lost three events to rain in an oddly wet California winter. The Aces have won three titles with the Eagles and Vikings taking one each. The Heathens are the only title-less team at this point.
