Team Challenge Round Two
Story and Photos Michael Kirby
The very exciting and crowd favorite Team Challenge returned for round two Friday night at Fast Friday's Motorcycle Speedway in Auburn Ca. The challenge between Team SOS and Team AR-17 pits riders working in pairs to score points based on finishing position. The way it works if one rider on the team gets a good gate and takes the lead his teammate would them block and run interference to help escort him to the finish line. Riders score three points for a win, two points for second place and one point for third place. The scores are added and continue to accumulate until the final round when a winner is declared.
Team AR-17 came into round two holding a lead 13 points to Team SOS's five points. In heat one Team AR-17 added four points with a first place finish by Gino Manzares and a third place finish by Tyler Warren. Louie Mersaroli kicked in two points for Team SOS with a second place finish. In heat two again Team AR-17 put the hammer down with another four points this time Billy Janniro winning with three points and Blake Borello adding one with a third place finish. Bart Bast added two for Team SOS with a second place finish. Team AR-17 picked up eight points and Team SOS picked up four points. The score after two rounds is Team AR-17 with 21 and Team SOS with nine points. Round three continues on June 24.
Russell Green proved to be the fastest man of the night winning the scratch main event. Green was second in his heat race, first in his semi-final to transfer to the main event. Out of lane four Green got a good jump off the line and tucked right into the lead which he never gave up. Green faced Bart Bast in lane one, Gino Manzares in lane two and Tyler Warren in lane three. Green led by about 30 yards the whole race with Bast the nearest rider giving chase. Warren took a tumble which took him out of the running. Bast was second, Manzares was third followed by Warren. Green also is the points leader so far this season in Division I.
Rheten Todd won the handicap main event a repeat of his performance in week two at Fast Fridays. Todd was perfect in the handicap program winning his heat race, semi-final and the main. Todd rides off the 20 yard line and will likely be moved back to the 30 yard line for next week's race. Blake Borello was second and Louie Mersaroli was third.
John Peters a consistent top three finisher in Division II won the Division II main event. Peters won the Division II main event in week two and was second last week in week three. Peters kept ahead of Sammy Tetrault who finished second and Lawrence McNutt who finished third. Tetrault is the Fast Friday's points leader in Division II as of last week. Newcomer to Fast Friday's Sam Richardson showed he has what it takes winning the Division III main event. Richardson won his heat race and transferred to the main for the win. Ray Holt Jr. Jr. was second and another newcomer to Fast Friday's Cody Aker finished third.
Charlie Trana took advantage of a mishap by Chase Kangas who fell in the third lap of the Youth 250 main event leaving the win wide open for Trana. Both Kangas and Trana go at it pretty hard each week in their division. Catherine Moore was second and Kangas was third.
It is not often that a youth event is one of the most exciting races of the night but in the Youth 150 main event Friday night Caden Cavrikas and Wesley Rearick put on quite a show. For four laps these two young champions rode side by side inches from each other back a forth for the lead until just at the finish line on the last lap when Cavrikas pulled ahead just a bit for the win by inches. Rearick was second and Jameson Hutchinson was third. Great racing boys.
