Industry Hills Speedway, CA, USA - June 14
Broc Nicol suffered a terrible start to his evening, then rattled off four straight wins and was victorious in the Scratch Main Event on Jay’s Roofing Night at Industry Hills Speedway.
Nicol used the first choice of starting positions to select gate one and it proved to be a wise decision. He left the starting line evenly with 2022 AMA National Champion “Mad” Max Ruml, who started in gate two, and they entered turn one together. Nicol hugged the inside line while Max Ruml drifted up into the dirt. They maintained their respective racing lines and were wheel-to-wheel through the first lap. Nicol found more traction on the back straight and grabbed the lead. Max Ruml chased the leader the remaining two laps but was unsuccessful. Nicol was first to the checkered flag, Max Ruml finished second, Dillon “Pickle” Ruml was third, and Tim Gomez finished fourth.
The racers were confronted with a very heavy track conditions to open the evening. The racers struggled and it led to some unconventional racing. 2021 Under 21 National Champion Slater Lightcap was victorious over Michael Wells in the first race. Nicol was leading the second event but caught his engine in the deep dirt and forced him to pull up. Wilbur Hancock was the beneficiary as he defeated Gomez and Bobby “Boogaloo” Schwartz. Dillon Ruml ended the first round by beating Shawn “Mad Dog” McConnell and “Fast” Eddie Castro. Mark Fillebrown appeared to be making a late-race attempt to pass Castro in turn four but instead contacted his rear wheel which sent him into the fence. Fillebrown was down for several minutes before being helped off the track. It was later determined that he had suffered a fracture of his lower leg.
Extensive track grading produced much-improved racing conditions for the second round and beyond. Nicol and Max Ruml battled closely through the first corner before the latter lifted on the back straight. That was enough for Nicol to secure the lead and his first victory. Dillon Ruml defeated Lightcap and Hancock in a battle of the first-round winners. Gomez completed round two with a win while Wells slipped past McConnell to get second.
Castro began the third round with a fantastic start and victory over Lightcap and Gomez. Nicol scored his second straight win ahead of Hancock and Wells. The final heat race featured the Ruml brothers. They were side-by-side, Max on the inside and Dillon on the outside for the first lap. Dillon found more traction the second time through turn two and that extra dirt put him in front. He held off his older brother to complete the heats undefeated.
The Rumls’ sibling battle was quickly rekindled in the first semi-final. Max Ruml trapped from gate four then raced around the cushion for the win while Dillon followed him into the main by finishing second. Nicol seemed destined for the Scratch Consolation when he touched the tapes and was penalized 20 yards. Gomez made the best start and led Lightcap through turns one and two but Nicol was working quickly despite starting behind everyone. He quickly dispatched Castro and turned his attentions farther ahead. Gomez was successfully fending off Lightcap but this allowed Nicol to swiftly gain ground via the plentiful dirt on the outside. Nicol went around Lightcap but wasn’t satisfied with merely transferring into the main. He kept the throttle open and passed Gomez for the win.
Lightcap was leading the Scratch Consolation when Wells went down on the second lap and brought out the red flag. Wells was excluded from the restart. Lightcap led the restart from start-to-finish with Hancock getting second and Castro finishing third.
Harold Hartke led the Second Division Main Event for two laps but Bruce Marteney was closing in on him. Hartke went too wide exiting turn two and Marteney pounced on his mistake. Hartke chased after Marteney but was unable to close ground. Marteney led to the finish, Joey Donaldson stormed up the inside of Hartke in the last corner for second, and Kevin Fiore was credited with fourth.
Pastor Bob Peet was the early leader of the Third Division Main Event. Jake Myers, who had started on the 20 yard line, weaved through traffic to second place and turned his attention toward the leader. Myers was planted on the leader’s back tire. Myers was patient and was still hoping for a mistake when they took the white flag. He found his opportunity and charged up the inside of Peet on the back straight. He took the lead entering turn three and held on for the victory. Peet settled for second, Greg Willis was third, Ryan Bacarella finished fourth, Paige Newsham was fifth in her speedway debut, and Colorado’s Bobby Richards finished sixth.
Levi “Cowboy” Leutz used the wide line in the first bend to secure the lead and the victory over Jose “Nitro” Navarrete in the Junior 250 Main Event.
Morgan Myers was leading the Mini 150 Main Event but suffered a brief mechanical issue that allowed Hudson Jones and Kayd Fiore to get by. Hudson Jones was leading until going a little wide on the back straight and Kayd Fiore snatched the lead. Kayd Fiore didn’t look back from there and claimed the victory. Hudson Jones finished second, Morgan Myers was third, and Maddux Myers finished fourth.
Jett Ferré put together four smooth laps and was victorious in the Pee Wee Main Event. Roxen McConnell was second, Jenson Horn finished third, and Leilah Rivera was fourth.
Former National Sidecar Champions Joe Jones and Tom Summers led all four laps en route to victory in the Sidecar Main Event. Kevin Kale and Tracy Gallagher finished second and Ace Kale and Brent Smith were third.
The next event at Industry Hills Speedway will be this Wednesday, June 21. All divisions of speedway are on the schedule along with juniors, pee wees, and sidecars.
