1995 East Cost Speedway Race Results
Niagara Raceway (Welland) June 24
By Kim Gregory
A crowd of about six hundred were on hand but only ten riders attended this match. The program was filled out with flat track, go-carts, and midget race cars. The cars helped widen the groove from the previous week which allowed for good room for passing for the bikes. Welland does not use a tape at the start line, and results in very uneven starts. Two heats of five, a consolation race, and a final were run in speedway (similar to flat track racing). Orosz and Gradwell came from the first heat, Kehoe and Dillon from heat two, and Hesmer and Legault from the consolation.
The final began with four on the start line and the two riders from the consolation 10 yards back. The start was red flagged because a rider was indicating he had mechanical problems. The restart had all six bikes at the tape (protested by Len after the race). Len Dillon had the early lead and by the second lap, Kehoe was beside him from turn two to three (on the inside). At the entrance to turn three Len went down, Chris Hesmer in third made it past him on the inside, but Jeff Orosz had to lay it down to avoid Len. The race was not stopped, and Len grabbed a marker cone and swung at Kehoe who was still racing. Len insists that Kehoe knocked him off the track, but other witnesses did not see any obvious contact (including Chris in third place). The results of the race were still in dispute hours later.
Unofficial results were Kehoe, Hesmer, Legault, Gradwell.
