June 1, 1996 - Castro Sweeps Speedway Program Victorville Speedway

They call him "Fast Eddie" Castro the Ojai flash and at Speedway USA he showed the fans why as he put on one of the best performances of his career in capturing both the handicap and scratch motorcycle main events.
Michael Hull took the early lead in the handicap main event, but Castro and John Aden came off the 80 yard line and were soon challenging for the lead. Castro made a bonzi move on the outside and swept past hull and blasted home to victory over Hull, Aden, Josh May and Brad Sauer.
As exciting as the main handicap main was, the scratch main was even better. Castro and Aden rode handlebar to handlebar for the first two laps until Castro slid wide on the outside groove and Aden moved ahead. Eddie regained control and set out after Aden, pulling even in the final turn of the last lap and just nipping Aden at the finish line. Hull finished third with Sauer fourth.
On the sidecar side of the program, it looked like the team of New Zealanders Duane Carmont and Richard Tarling would duplicate Castro's double main wins as they sped away with the handicap main event, defeating the teams of Joe Petrgalovic and John Abright, Ian Stewart and Chris Chapman, Peter Lewis and Jamie Macy, Roger Loeffers and Arnold Fimbres and Bob Brayton and Parke Weaver. In the scratch main Carmont and Tarling got into a heated fight with Dirk Gardner and Doug Lynch which resulted in a collision that sent Lewis and Macy into the infield and brought out a red flag. On the restart Carmont and Tarling took the lead and were running away with the race when they spun out in the final turn of the final lap and Gardner and Lynch took the win over Lewis and Macy, and Petrgalovic and Abright.
In the support class main event, Aaron Nichols passed early leader Cory Rudolph and held off Rudolph's retaliation attempts to take the win over Rudolph, Terry McCurdy, Bill Lyons and Paul Hitchcock. In the junior division Galina Miller took first place with John Childress second, Tommy Clark third and Jesse Little fourth.
