Had it not been for three tactical substitutions, the points difference would have been even more embarassing for the South. And it could have been yet worse. Billy Janniro lost what was a safe second place in heat 14 when he hit the wall feet from the finishing tapes on the 4th lap. The North's captain, Tommy Hedden could have been in the team. Tommy, who has been recovering from a broken arm for the last couple of months got bad news this week, that the bones are not bonding together properly and he is going to have to be re-operated on, to have pins removed and screws inserted.

In addition to the Civil War, the Southern California riders made the trek north for the fourth round of the National qualifier, which took place the following evening.

The Northern California riders displayed a lot of good team riding. Twice Eddie Castro was kept in fourth place by careful positioning by the second and third N. Cal riders.
It was a good, entertaining evening of racing.

Hello Fellow Speedway Fans

I just want to add a few comments to Gary's posting concerning the North vs South Race in Auburn on July 25th.

This is the second year that we (North) beat the South, indicating that last year was no fluke.

The turning point in the match might have been heat 6 when Steve Lucero was disqualified for hitting the tapes. At that point the score was 16-14 and the South had a great opportunity to make it 17-19 with a 1-5. With Lucero out Bobby Hedden took charge and made it a 5-1 for the North.

An annoying tactic by the Southern riders is to take someone out when they are being passed on the outside... sort of rude...

Another thing I noticed is that in the ten years or so that I have seen Steve Lucero race at Auburn, I have never seen him lose when he started from the pole... Tonight he was burned by Bart Bast, twice. A great night of racing for us Northern fans.
