Week 3
May 16, 1998 - IMI Motorsports Complex
From: Jennifer Susich, fainche@earthlink.net

We had 17 riders for our third race this season. Special thanks to Cindy Pieper-Horton who watched over Allen "X Man" Williams' kids so he could race. Extra special thanks to Lee Cederberg, a forefather of flat track who began racing in 1945. A couple weeks ago Dave Pieper blew up his motor and Lee lent him his speedway bike. It was on this bike that Pieper has done so well. And due to his incredible performance tonight, someone approached Lee to purchase the bike. Thanks, Lee, for your great support of IMI and all our riders.

Round 1
Mike Rohr got the gate in race one but went down in the first turn. Chad Harris and Joe Gawith battled this race, but Con "Air" Harris took first, followed by Calvin "The Calvinator" Harrington. Tom "Kamikaze Kid" Kern and "Up"Chuck Johansen rode side by side for a couple of laps, but Kern pulled ahead and then passed Gene "The Dancin' Machine" Petz on the inside to come in second, right behind Bouncin' Bobby Richards. Race three was led by Rob "Fire" Ball with Pat "The Rat" Litt right on his tail, passing on the finish line for the win. The fourth race witnessed Don "Batman" Foster holding true to form, going down in turn three, taking Shawn "Hurricane" Hurley with him. Since half the field went down on the first lap, we restarted. Dave "Colorado Cowboy" Pieper won this one.

Round 2
Litt won the first race by almost 1/2 a track. Kern dominated the second race. Race three looked like a parade as all riders were spaced evenly throughout the track, with Ball in the lead. Cowboy Pieper won the fourth race.

Round 3
Pieper lead Ball on a rail through the first race. Richards led the second, but went down in turn three on the last lap, giving the win to Jay "Do or Die" Gruetzmacher, who passed Foster on the inside. Hurley chewed dirt again in turn three of lap one and Litt almost lapped the rest for his third win of the evening. Petz took down the tape in race four and was pushed back five yards. Joe Gawith tried passing Chad Harris on the outside, and finally made it around on the inside, only to have Harris go inside to pass Gawith. Petz won the race with a flat tire. Go Gene!

Round 4
Ball took race one and Pieper took race two. Foster passed Chad Harris on the inside to grab second behind Litt in race three. Petz took race four.

Round 5
Johansen was looking beautiful as he led the first race. Then he blew up his motor. Foster took first. Race two was led by Pieper with Litt breathing down his neck. It was a photo-finish, with Litt passing and winning by an inch. Gruetzmacher won the third race. Hurley passed Chad Harris on the inside in race four, and Ball passed Richards on the inside to snag the win.
